NO RESERVE! - 1981 Rolls Royce Silver Spirit

Highlights

• 4 New White Walls
• New Steering Rack
• Fuel system overhaul with the Carbs rejetted and balanced

The Background

Produced between 1980-97 the Rolls Royce Silver Spirit was part of the companies new generation of models.

The Mark I took the same design philosophy that its predecessor the Silver Shadow with its 6.75L V8 engine and 3 speed automatic gearbox, unlike the shadow the spirit benefitted from wider body work, a lower stance and a more aerodynamic all-round body style. As you can imagine for a Rolls Royce the Silver Spirit carried on the idea that ride quality is everything and it utilized their hydropneumatics self-leveling suspension.

These cars were expensive back in the day and, like these day, were the height of luxury with the finest leathers, walnut veneered wooden trim, and miles of room in the rear sections, these were the way to show that you had made it.

The History

This Rolls Royce has spent some of its time over in Germany before it came over to the UK in the early 2000’s where it appears to have been in places like Lincolnshire and Essex where it has been looked after by Rolls Royce specialists.

The Paperwork

There is a decent amount of paperwork that comes with the car to document its history.

Some of the works of interest are the replacement of the steering rack in 2015, some brake pump replacement parts and a fairly large bill from 2020 which seemed to fix the issue of ‘suspected oil ingress into engine sump’ and ‘leaking brake leaking’ this was quite a major undertaking and it resulted in a fairly large bill.
There are also some original tax discs that are within the paperwork bundle.

The Interior

The interior Is just like you’d imagine from a Rolls Royce, fine grade leather, wooden accents, and miles of space. It is one of the best places to sit within the automotive world and coupled with the exquisite ride quality of a Rolls Royce you will get to your destination as fresh as when you left.

All the important dials work, with a couple of new dials in the boot. Some elements have been bought into the modern age with a CD multi changer and radio installed.

There are a few issues with the interior however, there are a few cracks on both of the front seats and the woodwork will need re-lacquering. And whilst the air-con is still there it doesn’t work as it once did. When these few issues are rectified the interior will shine like new again.

The Exterior

The Exterior of this land yacht is in good condition; the spirit of ecstasy still flies atop the famous metal grill. There are a couple of receipts that point to the fact that both of the front wings have been replaced at a cost of around €1600 back in 2016.

This Rolls Royce has also been treated to some fresh white walls only a few hundred miles ago which really set off the exterior of the vehicle.
The outside isn’t without issues as there a few marks here and there. The rear offside wheel arch is showing some signs of rust, but some of the issues with the paint will be sorted after a good detail.

The Mechanics

The mechanical aspect of this Rolls is pretty good. The engine starts on the button and runs smooth, the gearbox goes through the box nicely and the brakes are in tip top condition.

The hydraulically controlled suspension is good and helps iron out all of the potholes that now dot the English road network.
To make sure the engine runs well there has been a procedure to overhaul the fuel system which included having the carburetors re-jetted and balanced to make sure the massive 6.75L engine gets the correct fuel and air mixture.

Within the next few months the car becomes Tax and MOT exempt. The current owner did put the car in for a retrospective MOT within the past few days, it ended up failing on the rear bushes and the rear bush mounting points that now require welding. The current owner will not be completing this work.

The Appeal

This is your time to own a luxury vehicle at a fraction of its original forecourt price. Who wouldn’t love to drive every in the highly refined cabin of a Rolls Royce Silver Spirit and with the ride comfort the hydro-pneumatic suspension it is a great motorway mile muncher.

This may not be the finest example you will see, but as a no reserve car you can have the opportunity to have a lot of car for the money. When the issues have been fixed with the car you can enjoy all every inch of this car, and there are a few of them, in the way it was designed to be enjoyed and used.
