NO RESERVE - 1979 Daimler 4.2 Vanden Plas Series II

Highlights

• Totally original condition
• Low mileage
• Running and driving
• Bodywork and interior in very nice shape

The Background

The Daimler Sovereign was a Jaguar-based luxury saloon car that was sold in three versions from 1969-1983. During that time, it was the sole Jaguar saloon and was one of the most recognisable British cars from this time period.
The Vanden Plas model designation was only assigned to the very top-of-the-line Daimlers, and had uniquely trimmed interiors with plusher carpets, nylon rugs, adjustable rear-quarter reading lamps and an extra cigar lighter in the rear.

The History

AES 93T was originally sold and registered in the UK, before making its way over to the South of France alongside an ex-pat in the mid-2000s. It was not used very often during this time and has been sat in a barn located on a vineyard just outside Bordeaux for the last 13 years or so.
The current owner purchased it from a friend of a friend earlier in 2021. All it required to get it going were some jump leads, and it fired straight up. He had the car transported back to the UK to sit alongside a collection of other classic Jaguars. With little time to use or restore this particular car, he has since decided to consolidate his collection and hence put it up for sale with some of the others.

The Paperwork

The only paperwork that comes with the car is the V5C log book in the owner’s name and an old-style tax disc for additional retro cool points.

The Interior

Inside the overall condition of the totally original interior can be described as very good and would come up extremely nice indeed with a full interior valet.
The superb-quality leather seats have stood the test of time remarkably well with no serious rips or tears, and the carpets are generally in nice order aside from some noticeable wear on the transmission tunnel.
All of the switchgear is said to be in working order, with the wipers, windows, heater and desirable Smiths gauges functioning properly.
The cabin is lavished with delightful wood trim, which in general is in excellent condition aside from some cracking on the glovebox lid and aging on the driver’s door. The steering wheel, gear lever and other interior controls are in very nice shape for their age.

The Exterior

For the most part the bodywork is in very good condition but could do with a full exterior detail in order to remove some of the light scratches and bring it back up to its full potential.
The wheels are in need of a refurb and brightwork pieces would benefit from re-chroming, but the only real noticeable damage on the outside is on the front bumper underneath the indicator, as well as a handful of small dents that would likely be easy to fix.
All of the exterior glass is perfect (aside from the missing wing mirror glass) and the lovely black vinyl roof looks to be in good condition, too.

The Mechanics

Mechanically the car starts, runs and drives reasonably well for a 42 year old car, with the usual caveats that come with a car that has been stood for a long period of time. The six-cylinder 4.2 engine itself ticks over absolutely fine and keeps at a steady temperature, while the auto gearbox shifts smoothly.
The vendor has performed no deferred maintenance as yet, and it would therefore be a good idea for the new owner to give the engine a good service as well as replace the tyres and other consumable items.
The only fault known to the owner is the bonnet that doesn’t latch properly.

The Appeal

This is a great opportunity to purchase a charming, rare, and low mileage classic Daimler that is truly original in every sense.
It runs and drives as it should and while it would benefit from some light mechanical and cosmetic restoration, it is a very good solid car to start with.
