NO RESERVE - 1972 Ford Cortina GT

Highlights

  • One owner
  • Original condition
  • Garaged for last 40 years

The Appeal

Following the merger of Ford Britain and Ford Germany in the late 1960’s, Ford set about developing the third-generation Cortina, the Mark III which as a result of the merger would be produced in higher numbers. Apparently inspired by the ‘Coke bottle’ design, it sported similar fluted bonnet and beltline design elements of the Mercury Montego. Available in 1300 and 1600cc engines initially, the GT had Rostyle wheels and 4 headlights up front.
At the time of launch the Mark III came under some criticism in the press for its somewhat ‘harsh ride’. In 1971 the spring rates and damper settings were altered along with the front suspension bushes, reducing the bounciness of the ride. While this model was made after those changes, we are unable to comment on the smoothness of the ride as this one was parked up in the garage some 40 years ago and hasn’t moved since.
Purchased new in Birmingham in 1972, this has remained within the same family throughout that time.

The Exterior

  • Original Daytona Yellow paintwork is in half reasonable condition thanks to it being stored in a garage for so long
  • There is significant rust evident around the wheel arches, sills, wings, the front grill and various other spots throughout the bodywork as illustrated in the photographs
  • Rubbers appear to be in good condition and haven’t perished
  •  Rear offside passenger window has come free from the latch and needs to be fixed
  • Small dent to passenger door and bonnet
  • Original Rostyle wheels
  • Tow bar
  • Appears to be in original condition
  • Lights are free from any cracks or damage

The Mechanics

  • 1600cc petrol engine
  • 4-speed manual gearbox
  • The wife of the deceased owner was unaware of any modifications and while there is no service history with the car, she advised that her late husband always kept the car well serviced

The Summary

While they may have sold in healthy numbers back in the 70’s, there are very few left on the streets today. A quick look at howmanyleft.co.uk estimates that figure to be a shade over 100. The fact that this one has sat in a garage for 40 years has meant much of the original interior could be salvaged with a thorough clean. The bodywork will certainly need a bit more attention and the mechanics are difficult to establish. But if you’ve got the passion, the right knowledge, time and effort, this rare and seemingly original 1600 GT, could be brought back to its former glory.
