Highlights
- Original and unrestored inside and out according to the vendor
- Low mileage, retaining original running in instructions on the windscreen
- Dry stored for many years as part of a large car collection
The Appeal
Intended as a replacement for the popular 600, Fiat’s 850 was intended as a compact city car that could tackle the longer journeys its predecessors struggled with. Priced competitively and built to a budget, the 850 was a true people’s car and the nature of their usage means that comparatively few original, low mileage examples survive.
Here we have a delightfully original, apparently unrestored Fiat 850 with just over 22,000 miles on the odometer and the running in instructions still on the windscreen. In storage for the past 8-10 years as part of a large car collection, this is a fantastic opportunity to acquire what must be one of the most original right-hand drive 850s around.
The History and Paperwork
- Stored as part of a large private collection for a number of years
- RHD car believed to have been in the UK for its whole life
- Now in need of recommissioning
The Interior
- ‘Time warp’ condition - incredibly original and with little wear
- Red vinyl upholstery in very good overall condition
- The fabric is coming away slightly at the base of the driver’s seat
- There is very little wear to the seat squabs and remarkably, no sagging or stretching
- The door cards match the seats and are in good shape for their age
- Very little age is evident on the dashboard which still bears a period Britax sticker
- A little crazing is evident around the switchgear although it is quite usable
- The floor and bulkhead are lined with ribbed rubber matting which is in good condition
- Running in instructions are still legible on the inside of the windscreen
- The front luggage compartment is not lined, revealing the steel body to be in good shape
The Exterior
- White paintwork presents really well and holds a good shine
- Smart original brightwork without damage and pitting
- Period-correct Fiat branded mud flaps
- The vendor informs us that some bodywork and paint correction is required in places - pointing out some blemishes on the engine lid
- There is some paint bubbling around the lower quarters
- The vendor assures us that no welding is required anywhere on the vehicle
- The badging is patinated, but eminently serviceable
- The steel wheels have hubcaps and present well
- The tyres are apparently in fair condition
The Mechanics
- 850cc 4-cylinder engine
- ‘Idromatic’ semi-automatic transmission
- Will require some recommissioning work
- Original sticker on the air filter
- Engine turns over freely
Summary
There can’t be many right-hand drive Fiat 850s in such original condition as this one. If you fancy a manageable winter recommissioning project that can be completed within a small garage, this would be a fantastic candidate for your attention.
