NO RESERVE - 1966 Humber Sceptre Mk2 Barn Find

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Rarest of the Sceptres
  • Complete and largely solid
  • Genuine barn find
  • Ready to restore

THE APPEAL

Introduced in 1963, the original Humber Sceptre was part of Rootes Group’s rationalisation of its Hillman, Sunbeam, Singer and Humber brands, using shared body structures rather than bespoke designs.
The Sceptre was the luxury model, based on the Hillman Super Minx. It featured a unique roof, glass and rear bodywork and a much more upmarket cabin, with a dash that echoed the look of the Aston Martin DB5, no less. It was also sumptuously trimmed, with leather upholstery and deep-pile carpets.
The Mk2 model, which is what we have here, is the rarest of all the Sceptres, built for two years only and one of only 11,200 produced. It featured a revised front end with a wider grille and larger outer headlamps, as well as an improved five-bearing 1,725cc engine, with twin carburettors.
This one is a genuine barn-find, a 1966 car that was in its most recent ownership since 1988. It’s a full restoration project, offered with no reserve, and is a genuine barn find – a complete and original car that is entirely complete and in need of restoration.

  • Panels are all salvageable with no substantial signs of rot
  • Seemingly quite solid underneath but will require some restoration work
  • Paintwork very faded and badly deteriorated

THE MECHANICS

  • 1,725cc twin carb engine
  • 4-spd manual overdrive transmission
  • Vehicle hasn’t been driven for many years and will require mechanical work
  • Will require recovery via trailer or low-loader
  • Engine turns and is not seized

SUMMARY

If you’re looking for a classy, stylish and sturdy British classic to restore then here’s a great opportunity to get your hands on one of the nicest small luxury saloons ever made. It’s a barn find and a restoration project, so don’t think for a minute that you’ll be driving it home, or any time in the near future. But as projects go, it’s all there, it’s surprisingly sound and it absolutely oozes potential. This is a car that promises to be a lot of fun to restore, and the fact it’s pretty much complete and original means there shouldn’t be too much of a hunt for rare parts.
