The Attractions
While the British Armed Forces had been in love with the Land Rover since 1948, by the mid-1960s they realised that they would need a more compact version that could be transported by plane and easily dismantled in the field if necessary. While Austin's proposed potential replacements for the Land Rover failed to meet military requirements, Land Rover met demand with the creation of the 'Lightweight' in 1968. The name was slightly misleading, as in practice the 'Lightweight' was no less heavy than its civilian counterparts, yet its size and simplified bodywork proved perfect for the Armed Forces and the contract was awarded.
Here we present one of the first well-preserved left-hand-drive examples. It is unusual to find these ex-military Land Rovers in Italy, especially in such good condition. For those looking for a well-kept example, this is the ideal one, as this Lightweight is in perfect working order and benefits from the installation of a new canvas cover and axle oil seals.
