Highlights
- Believed to have been built in period using a Dallara or Dallara-style bodykit
- The vendor informs us that it was once a regular sight at Dijon Prenois
- Awesome glass fibre bodywork which includes a sizeable rear wing
The Appeal
If you’re a fan of ‘70s motorsport, you may well have heard of Group 5 racing and one product of this exhilarating series was the Bertone designed Fiat X1/9 Dallara Icsunonove. Here we have an X1/9 that we believe was built in period from a Dallara kit and raced successfully on circuits and hillclimbs.
This X1/9 has been out of commission for some time so is now in need of restoration before it hits the track again. Not much is known about its history although the vendor informs us that it was once a regular sight at Dijon Prenois!
Equipped with an 8 valve 1596cc engine, an aggressive limited-slip differential and a simply enormous glass fibre rear wing, we’re sure you’ll agree that this Fiat is quite the machine. If you’re on the lookout for a ‘70s track or hillclimb car, this X1/9-based oddity would be a fantastic project.
The History and Paperwork
- Restoration project that has been in storage for some time
- We’re informed that it was formerly used for group 5 circuit racing
- The vendor knows little of the car’s history
- Believed to have been built in period using a Dallara or Dallara-style bodykit
- We’re informed that it would frequent Dijon Prenois and was a successful hillclimb car
The Interior
- Paired back to save as much weight as possible
- It appears that all the controls are in place
- Custom-built dashboard binnacle with gauges for water temperature, oil pressure and a tachometer
- The basic centre console features a battery cutt-off switch, and any essential switchgear
- Single moulded driver’s seat fitted
- Presented in ‘as found’ condition, so everything is untouched
- Bolted in roll cage, the integrity of which has not been appraised
- There is of course no carpeting or indeed any other luxuries as this is strictly a competition car
The Exterior
- Fitted with a large rear wing
- Glass fibre body kit
- The red paintwork now shows its age with general wear and a few scuffs
- The most notable damage we could see is a split in the nearside front wing which has previously been riveted back together
- A few glass fibre repairs and general restoration work will likely be in order
- The glass appears in good shape and while the perspex windows seem a little cloudy, a good clean and polish may be all that is required
- The alloy wheels look really smart and are shod with slick tyres which will of course require replacement
- The bonnet is currently removed but is present along with the rear engine hatch
- Overall, the body shell looks to be in good condition and a good candidate for restoration
The Mechanics
- 1596cc 8v four-cylinder engine, Kugelfischer guillotine injection
- Has not run for some time
- The vendor informs us that the engine turns freely but will of course need inspection
- Mechanically, the car remains untested
- Pushing the car around the workshop with any lock is challenging, suggesting an aggressive LSD is fitted
- Trumpets fitted to the intake manifold
- Large competition exhaust
- All looks to be fairly complete under the engine hatch
- Supplied with some spare parts including a cylinder head and crankshaft
Summary
This is a really intriguing project and we’re sure this car has a fascinating history waiting to be unearthed by the next owner.
