Bennett is one of the oldest manufacturers of an essential accessory for motorists: petrol pumps. The 900 series was launched in 1954, offering an elegant design with a large panoramic dial that could be read from a distance. These pumps also introduced the innovative idea of double hoses, doubling capacity on the forecourt by allowing cars to use both sides of the pump.
In 1956, the company introduced its first pump with fluorescent dials. This striking example appears to be one of them, a '962' model with the Signal logo on the front.
These pumps were ubiquitous across the US in the mid to late 1950s. For this reason alone, they are an integral part of the American retro scene and are sought-after accessories to complement classic car garages around the world.
Condition
This pump is in interesting, carefully patinated condition. Finished in a distinctive orange, yellow and blue paint, embellished with period decals and Bennett trim, it would undoubtedly be a must-see talking point in any garage.
It features the Bennett panoramic dial, but the glass is missing, as is the globe on the roof.
It's a very elegant pump full of character from the golden age of American motoring.
