2022 LB Specialist Cars Stratos STR

HIGHLIGHTS

  •  Fantastic sounding Alfa Romeo 3-litre V6 Busso
  •  Under 2,000 miles since completion
  •  Comprehensive build documentation
  •  IVA certificate issued in November 2021

THE APPEAL

Designed from scratch, the highly successful Bertone-designed Lancia Stratos is undoubtedly a rally legend, winning the World Rally Championship in 1974, ’75, and ’76, and amongst others, the Tour de France Automobile five times.
Retaining all the visual character of the genuine Stratos, the road legal Lister Bell homage is a highly respected and authentic replica incorporating modern technology and components to make it a fantastic drivers car for the 21st Century.

This amazing example was built by the owner and passionate Italian car enthusiast over a number of years using a Lister Bell STR road chassis (number 28) with full integral roll cage and all the LB modules to complete the car to a road-going level. Built as a right hand drive example, it could be converted to LHD by an overseas buyer.
Take a further peek at the specification - this is truly an amazing car and totally ready to enjoy…

THE INTERIOR

  •  Elegant Stradale-style dash layout
  •  Full compliment of equipment
  •  Superb level of finish throughout
Opening the lightweight doors we find a Stradale type dash surround binnacle and centre tunnel trimmed in grey leather. The black powder-coated dash facia has LB electronic instrumentation featuring a central tachometer, speedometer and a quartet of vital readouts and Stratos inspired detailing.
A suede-covered steering wheel features a Lancia logo and all the switchgear is in excellent order and within easy reach. The windscreen is heated and a 3-speed demist and heater fan, with switchable air-conditioning, is also installed. A reversing camera features.

Comfortable LB seat shells are upholstered in grey leather and matching alcantara complete with embroidered Stratos logos. The seats are mounted on Sabelt adjustable sliders and FIA compliant Sabelt 4-point harnesses are fitted.
Door pockets are included but not currently fitted to the door trims. The owner points out that the unique method of winding the windows down functions well and the glass angle actually reduces wind buffeting whilst driving.
Above, the roof is lined with a light coloured stitched covering and grey tailored carpeting and powder-coated sill covers neatly finish off the stylish cockpit.
Unexpectedly, a sizeable carpeted luggage space is also provided at the rear, making the car even more practical than you might think.

THE EXTERIOR

  •  Fantastic Stradale type body and authentic features
  •  Condition is spot on from every angle
  •  Befitting 5-spoke wheels
The striking and compact Bertone designed Stratos is expertly recreated by LB. The relatively new fibreglass body is in fantastic condition with no damage and the Sky Blue (RAL 5015) gelcoat is glossy with no discernible scratches or chips.
Stratos elements include the unmistakable roof spoiler, rear Louvres, rear spoiler and of course that gorgeous (and indeed practical) wraparound windscreen.
Recently completed, every aspect of this car is in great order. Items such as the pop-up Wipac headlights, Hella spot lamps, reversing lamp, fog lamp, mirrors, door handles, and so on, are all in fine condition and operating as they should.
Peering underneath, the painted chassis and items such as brake pipes are largely protected by aluminium plates. As you would expect, the suspension and brake components all appear to be in fine fettle.
5-spoke Coffin alloys are attached - 8x16” at the front and 9x16” at the rear. Toyo Proxes are fitted all round and have plenty of tread remaining.
A ‘shower cap’ cover is included.

THE MECHANICS

  •  Rebuilt 2,959 cc Alfa Romeo 3.0 V6 24V CF2 Busso engine
  •  Great sounding powerplant
  •  Refreshed 6-speed gearbox with GTA internals
  •  Quaife ATB differential
  •  All build invoices are present
Unclipping the side catches and lifting the front clamshell reveals the fluid reservoirs, heater and battery. Cooling is provided by an alloy cored radiator with twin 11” ECU-controlled fans.
Under the rear clamshell we find the gleaming mid-engined 3-litre Alfa Romeo V6. Supplied and rebuilt by Auto Lusso (Bournemouth), it is fitted with a solid flywheel from a 2.5-litre V6 156 which has been balanced to the engine by Vibration Free (Bicester).
Producing around 220 bhp, the output is comparable to the original Alfa donor. The ‘Lancia’ plenum chamber is a nice touch.
The engine also has standard Alfa tubular exhaust manifolds mated to the LB Stradale exhaust system featuring twin 5” stainless-steel silencers with integral catalysts. Engine management is provided by a stock Alfa CF2 ECU which also maintains the original Alfa ignition immobiliser for added security.
Recently fine-tuned by a qualified race engineer, the standard STR suspension is installed with double wishbones up front and a strut type rear set up connected to aircraft grade billet alloy uprights. Damping is provided by Gaz Gold coil-overs and front and rear anti-roll bars are in place.
Dual circuit brakes utilise a bias adjustable Wilwood pedal box with twin master cylinders at the pedal end. At the other end of the ptfe lines there are LB 4-pot brake calipers which are clamping onto 300 mm ventilated discs via EBC pads both front and rear. There are also dedicated Brembo handbrake calipers acting on each wheel.
With less than 2,000 miles under it’s belt, the owner is keen to point out that he has enjoyed driving this pocket rocket with a modicum of respect and hasn’t ventured up to the 7,000 rpm redline to date.

SUMMARY

Wow, what a head-turner! This Lister Bell Stratos is about as close as you will get to owning the real thing.
A true labour of love, many hours have gone into creating this affordable recreation. It not only looks amazing but is extremely well engineered, incorporating modern technology and components - the key to making it perform and handle beautifully.
