The Appeal

There have been many MX-5 special editions, but some specials are more special than others. And this one, arguably, is the most special. Because it celebrates 30 years of the car that changed the face of modern two-seater motoring.

Mazda went to town with the ND 30th Anniversary car. Taking the well specified 2L SportNav+ as its starting point, the firm added a raft of bespoke features of which the Racing Orange paintwork is the most obvious. Elsewhere outside there are uprated Brembo and Nissin calipers and RAYS 17in alloys. Inside the sense of individuality continues with generous swathes of Alcantara, Recaro seats and Bose sound.

Just 160 ‘Retractable Fastback’ RF models were allocated to the UK and they all sold before arriving. This must be amongst the lowest mileage, having covered a mere 7,000 miles in the hands of its fastidious single keeper. It is in great condition and features a large number of factory optional extras alongside the elevated Anniversary specification.

All this is before we even get to why you want an ND. After four generations of its iconic sports car, Mazda executed a reset. The fourth generation was a full rethink, delivering a car that went back to the original with its emphasis on lightness and nimbleness. It is all wrapped in a thoroughly modern rethink of the shape that is both classically proportioned - take a look at that long bonnet and stubby tail - and sharply contemporary. Later cars like this one got more power, upped to 185bhp from the 2L motor, with the rev band also widened.

Recently serviced and on the market with a fresh MOT - containing no advisories - this is an exceptionally rare opportunity to acquire what feels like a nailed on future classic.
