The Watch
In motorsport, every second counts. There was a time when you’d see a chronograph on the wrist of every driver, team owner and race mechanic. These watches have become synonymous with the sport and icons in their own right, like Steve McQueen’s Heuer Monaco or Paul Newman’s ‘panda-dialled’ Rolex Daytona.
In more recent years, leading watch brands have collaborated with racing teams, producing special, limited-edition timepieces. From 2003 to 2018, Swiss independent watchmaker Oris sponsored Williams F1, leading to several special watches worn by both Williams team members and offered to the general public. Here we have one such example, a stainless steel automatic mechanical chronograph from 2014 (reference: 01 673 7563 4184-07 4 27 01). The case is numbered 2566.
In a nod to modern motorsport technology, the watch features a carbon fibre weave dial with two horizontally stacked subdials for the chronograph complication and a date wheel at six o’clock.
It’s a big watch at 45mm and is reportedly powered by a self-winding 25-jewel ETA 7750 movement (aka Oris 673) which is visible through an exhibition caseback and has a 48-hour power reserve.
This piece comes complete with an original Oris steel integrated bracelet along with its original box and sought-after F1 wheel case. The tyre is made from real rubber and makes for an interesting display piece in itself.
This is a very stylish watch, bringing together some cool retro aesthetics with the modern carbon fibre dial. It has great wrist presence due to its large diameter and the thickness of the case, (necessary to house the automatic chronograph movement), makes it a real statement piece.
The Condition
The watch has been used but appears in very good condition for its age. We don’t see any deep scratches or chips to the crystal, bezel or exhibition case back There is of course a natural patina of use, but the case remains sharp, the chronograph pushers and crown appear in good shape while the bracelet links don’t appear to have any excessive play. We understand the clasp to be in good order and the stainless steel only appears lightly marked commensurate with age and time on the wrist.
We’re not informed of any known issues with the running of the watch, accuracy or any issues with the chronograph complication. As it’s now ten years old, neither Car & Classic nor the vendor can guarantee its water resistance or the efficacy of the lume.
