The Appeal

Rover engineering chief Maurice Wilks and his brother Spencer first built a Land Rover prototype in the mid-40s, based on a Jeep chassis, and tested it on Maurice’s farm in Anglesey.

By 1947 the first all-Land Rover model was being tested, with some 50 examples being produced, with the production 80-inch Series 1 unveiled at the 1948 Amsterdam Motor Show. It was an instant hit and within a year some 8,000 had been produced and the British Army had ordered their first trial batch. By the 1960s half a million had been sold around the world.
The Defender first appeared in 1990 and was popular with buyers thanks to the winning combination of coil-spring suspension and a torquey turbo-diesel engine.
Production ceased in 2016, making this 2014 example one of the last of the breed. The current owner is a Land Rover enthusiast with a private car collection and searched high and low to find an immaculate low mileage, one-owner example that he bought from a Land Rover main dealer with full service history. It’s in the classic Ninety body shape with handsome Santorini Black Metallic paintwork.

The History and Paperwork

  • V5C in owner’s name
  • Only 2 owners from new
  • Three main dealer services in the online history
  • MoT until 18 July 2023
  • No advisories on last MoT
The current owner is a car and bike enthusiast and keeps the Defender in a modern tiled four-car garage alongside another immaculate Land Rover pick-up and a classic Mercedes convertible. He is the second owner of the car which was bought from Roger Young Land Rover in Plymouth after an extensive search for an unmolested Ninety.
All the service history is online (just type in the VIN number on Land Rover’s website) and details three services at Roger Young Land Rover.
On 22 September 2014 at 8 miles the vehicle had its Pre-Delivery Inspection, followed by an oil and filer service at 10,426 miles on 22 September 2015. The third service on 21 April 2017 at 26,595 miles included oil and filter, brake fluid, air filter, fuel filter, alarm keyfob batteries as well as front and rear differential fluid.
The current owner bought the car on 28 July 2021 and has pampered it ever since. By its 19 July 2021 MoT it had only covered 46,183 miles and on its last MoT on 18 July 2022 this had only crept up to 46,476. It’s currently on 46,583 miles.
As the current owner is downsizing from his impressive eight-bedroom home, he needs to thin down his car and motorcycle collection, hence the sale.

The Interior

  • Seat covers have been used since new
  • Rubber flooring is as new
  • No visible wear on foot pedals or steering wheel
  • Rear storage area has clearly been covered in use
  • Handy centre consoled storage box added
Inside the Land Rover is all original apart from the addition of a useful Britpart centre console storage box and pair of cupholders. Inside this box you’ll find the front seat covers which have protected the front cloth seats since new. As you’d expect, they’re in first rate condition and look like new, as does the original rubber flooring.
There’s no wear on the rubbery steering wheel either and all the interior plastic trim and buttons looks like they’ve just rolled out of Solihull. In fact the only evidence that this isn’t a new vehicle on the cab is a tiny scratch on the gear lever and you have to look pretty closely to spot this.
The load space is in equally good condition and apart from a few light surface scratches is in great condition and was clearly covered while the vehicle was being used. Overall, this is about as close as it gets to a new vehicle’s interior condition in a used vehicle.  There’s nothing to upgrade, repair or fix.

The Exterior

  • Smart Santorini Black Metallic paintwork
  • Bodywork in excellent condition
  • Unmarked factory alloys
  • Underside undersealed
  • Towbar and mudflaps
  • Skid plate and snorkel
Santorini Black Metallic is a great colour for a Defender and it really shows off the Ninety’s lines well. The bodywork is largely free from dents and scratches and gleamed in the sunshine. The original silver Boost five-spoke wheels are all unmarked and shod with a set of 265/75-16 BF Goodrich All Terrain tyres that have lots of tread in them.
All the lights and lenses are uncracked and in good condition, while the rest of the bodywork fittings look unmarked.
The underside is particularly good with everything looking factory fresh and covered by underseal.
A few sensible bolt-on upgrades have been neatly fitted to the exterior, including a front skid plate to protect the engine, mud flaps, a towbar and a snorkel.

The Mechanics

  • Starts easily and drove fine for photos
  • Full main dealer history
  • Owner does not know of any faults
Being a recent model with low mileage and a full Land Rover main dealer service history, this Ninety is in excellent condition throughout and starts easily and was moved around without complaint for the photoshoot. The brakes, gears and clutch all selected fine and felt as new.
The current owner’s many vehicles are all in excellent condition and are all kept garaged and want for nothing – if this vehicle had needed anything doing to it, he would have attended to it. He reports that there is nothing that needs doing to the vehicle and it drives fine.

Summary

Many Land Rovers get abused and used off road or are used as working vehicles and show lots of signs of wear. This is not one of those vehicles and is in exceptional condition for a hard top with next to no signs of wear on it. The interior is as new and the exterior gleams like a new vehicle.

Sensible additions of seat covers, mudflaps and a skid plate indicate a careful previous owner, while the current owner pampers it in a tiled garage. A great chance to get one of the last of the breed while they’re still appreciating.
