The Appeal

As technologically impressive as Bentley's W12 engine was, the V8 it later developed in partnership with Audi for the second generation Continental GT arguably made a great deal more sense. Not only was it no slouch with 500 horsepower and a 192 mph top speed, the V8 also featured a clever cylinder deactivation system, switching off one bank to save fuel, resulting in a combined 26.1 mpg figure versus the W12's rather sobering 17.1 mpg.

Always one to speak his mind, TV's Jeremy Clarkson said of the V8 Continental GT:

"All the things I hated in the big-engined car, I found myself liking in the new one. Four-wheel drive? Used to be pointless. Now it’s just right and exactly what’s needed. The overly sensitive parking distance control? Used to drive me mad. Not any more. The weight? Ridiculous. Now? It’s excellent — it makes the car feel solid and planted."

This 2013 example cuts a fine figure in Hallmark grey over a Beluga hide interior with contrast red stitching. It also sits on the optional extra 21-inch alloy wheels, which help fill those muscular haunches.
