The Background

Launched to the world in 1959 the Mini has gone on to garner huge praise among the car community, it has lived on into the 21st century with a modern interpretation of the cult icon for a new audience.

When it entered production in 1959 it was revolutionary. The compact two-door city car design was then complemented by the forward-thinking engine layout, a transverse engine and front-wheel drive layout would leave 80% of the floor plan for the passengers. This layout would go on to influence the design of almost all compact cars.

After Rover's demise in 2000, BMW bought the rights to build the Mini and since 2001 the BMW Mini has gone on the garner cult status amongst car enthusiasts. In 2007 Mini would introduce the second generation with a re-engineered platform incorporating a few engineering changes and stylistic additions.

When it comes to the line-up of BMW Minis the John Cooper Works is at the top of the tree, with only the very limited run ‘GP’ editions sitting above it. A true pocket rocket this 2012 JCW is a perfectly capable all-rounder that all the family can enjoy.

The History

This Mini Cooper JCW would’ve rolled off the Oxfordshire production line in April of 2012 with its pre-delivery inspection taking place on the 25th of April at Cooper Mini in York. It would appear that this car stayed within the Yorkshire area until 2019, with only three owners from new the first owner probably had it for these 7 years.

The first owner loved their car, taking it to the mini main dealer for a service every year.

When they decided to part ways with this great little car it moved down south to the Essex area where once again it would receive yearly services with independent garages. Importantly the timing chain was replaced in March of last year at 106,701 miles meaning the next owner should not have to worry about having to complete this vital job.

It is thanks to the love from previous owners that this car now sits in great condition, with only a few age-related marks here and there. It is now ready for the next owner to enjoy all it has to offer.

The Paperwork

There is a little bit of paperwork that comes with this car. With the most recent MOT certificate which importantly showed no advisories, the all-important V5 is present too. Along with the legal documents, there are some lovely pieces of Mini original literature which includes the service book filled with Mini stamps.

Only a few invoices come with this Mini. One of them references a replacement pressure converter valve for the reconditioned turbo and one for the re-gassing of the air-con system. The air-conditioning also received a new condenser recently.

The Interior

The interior of the Mk2 BMW Mini is instantly recognisable thanks to its huge center-mounted speedometer and rev-counter set just behind the steering wheel. Unlike the original Mini’s these BMW examples have tons of creature comforts within the interior, from air-con to heated seats, Bluetooth calling, and interior mood lighting. It is full of modern features that make it extremely easy to live with.

The leather seats are in good condition showing some signs of their 100,000-mile use with most of the visible wear on the bolster of the driver’s seat. There are no nasty rips, tears, or stains on the material. Possibly, more importantly, they are nice and comfortable. With a lot of adjustment, it should be easy for you and your passengers to get into the right spot. The rest of the interior features such as all the black interior plastics are also in very good condition

Overall, the interior of this hot hatch is in great condition, the next owner will be benefiting from years of love and attention.

The Exterior

The exterior of the BMW generation of Mini is recognisable on the roads of the world these days. When it was released back in 2001 to some mixed reviews about its bigger stature than its older brothers. The second generation addressed some of these reviews and with the JCW version getting even more aggressive looks helped by a big chin spoiler and boot spoiler.

Finished in a deep gloss black it is complemented by the red roof and door mirrors, with its addition Chili pack the exterior also benefits from LED headlights and fog lights along with the interior sports seats, steering wheel controls, and driving modes. If you look carefully on the exterior, you will find a few age-related marks like a small parking ding on the driver’s side rear quarter and a few surface scratches on the bonnet.

This sporty-looking Mini sits on four 17” JCW specific alloys, all of which are in great condition showing little to no signs of curb rash. These four alloys are shrouded in four matching Hankook Ventus S1 Evo tires, a sporty tire built for a hot hatch like this. Its looks are enhanced dramatically by the huge twin-tipped exhaust that sits proudly in the middle of the rear bumper, this exhaust provides a nice throaty tone and can easily be upgraded should the next owner want to tinker with this car.

There is only one spot on the inside of the rear boot which you may need to keep your eye on. There is apparently 10p sized rust bubble under the rear boot lid but this should not detract from the overall condition of the exterior.

Overall, the exterior is in very good condition. With the sporty alloys, deep black paint, and contrasting red roof it is a purposeful looking car that you know not to underestimate at the traffic lights.

The Mechanics

The R56 Mini JCW is fitted with a small, but powerful, 1.6L turbo engine producing 208hp, and with its sport-tuned chassis it handles like a dream on tight and twisty back roads. Luckily, this car has been looked after mechanically, receiving yearly main dealer service until it moved to its second owner where it would get serviced at independent garages. The timing chain and tensioner were both serviced together at service dated 26-03-2021 as well as a new battery in March 2022.

Before the current owner got this car it had recently received a new reconditioned turbo to help produce all of its horsepower. Along with the recondition turbo, the current owner has also had to replace the turbo intake hose and boost pressure converter.

Out on the road, this car feels purposeful and powerful, in its normal mode it is nice a sedate returning up to 40mpg on a run which is excellent in the current climate, put it in sport and it is another animal, it threads its way through corners perfectly bringing a smile to your face. Like most modern, driver-focused cars, it is fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox. This box feels as it should, shifting gears nicely providing an engaging driving experience.

With all the power that is on tap and the driving characteristics of this hot hatch, it is a fun drive. With all of the service history and recent work on important elements such as the turbo and timing chain, the mechanical aspects are possibly the best attribute of the Mini John Cooper Works.

The Appeal

The R56 Mini is the perfect combination of style and performance, the original mini was always a style icon, and the new BMW Mini is no different. On top of the great styling, you get a perfectly capable powertrain with the 208hp that is on tap this Mini is probably more usable than any supercar.

This John Cooper Works has received a lot of care and attention over its life, and it is still in very good condition after ten years and 100,000 miles. Whoever gets the privilege to own this little hot hatch next will always have a smile on their face whenever they are driving,

With the Mini community being so huge and so welcoming to you will never be at a loss of what to do on your days off, with many mini-specific events up and down the country.
