The Appeal

Launched in 1979, the Gëlandewagen, affectionally known as the G- Wagon, has remained in the Mercedes-Benz range for an amazing 45 years, and has changed very little in that time. Only 400,000 units have ever rolled off the production line since its inception.
Developed in partnership with Steyr - arguably the world’s leading 4x4 engineering firm, the ‘G’ was utterly superb off-road. It was built to a quality far exceeding any of its rivals. The later W463 version which replaced the original W460 offers a much more civilised driving experience and heightened levels of luxury.

Combining off-road ability with refinement, it’s become the 4x4 of choice for the rich and famous as well for armies, firefighters and forest rangers around the world. A truly legendary vehicle that is both stylish and capable. Values remain on the rise since there is such short supply, something that will not change in the years to come, indicating a good investment as well as a great car to own.
HV11XOX is a remarkably original example of the later W463 series and presents in immaculate condition inside and out. One of only 14 examples of this particular model remaining on British roads, Its contrasting colourway, luxurious appointments, astonishing specification and full main dealer history make this a very rare opportunity indeed.
Ascending to virtually showroom condition, this special G-Wagon really is hard to fault, add in the silky smooth 7-speed automatic, power steering, punchy ULEZ-compliant engine and you have a compelling daily driver. If you have always coveted the right G-Wagon, look no further this is the one to bid on.

The History and Paperwork

  • Thick file of Mercedes invoices
  • Advisory free MoT valid until 2025
  • Original manuals still in leather wallet
First registered in January 2011, HV11XOX was supplied new by
Mercedes-Benz of Southampton and shows only two former keepers on the V5. The vendor reports that, according to the website ‘HowManyLeft’, there are only fourteen 3-litre CDI examples coupled with a 7-speed automatic gearbox left on the road.

The file of paperwork is amazingly comprehensive. There are invoices for servicing and work back throughout the car’s life, the leather folder containing all the original booklets and a sales invoice. There is a fully stamped service book, a printed record of, and invoices for, subsequent services at Mercedes dealerships and marque specialists, attention to detail like this is reassuring  The most recent invoice for over £5,000 shows comprehensive works carried out only a month ago, ensuring reduced costs for the new owner going forward.

The Condition

  • Reportedly unblemished paintwork
  • Superb colour combination
  • The original alloy wheels are in excellent order and show little signs of wear and the continental road tyres have plenty of life left in them
  • Factory headphones and first aid kit look unused
  • Exceedingly luxurious appointments
  • Carplay and Android unit fitted
The Obsidian Black Metallic paint is pretty much immaculate all round. This is clearly a car that has been cherished and never used off road. The car looks good from every angle, and the fact that the modern G-wagon still looks much the same is a testament to the car’s lasting appeal.
The wheels are great, with no evidence of kerbing, while the Continental road tyres have been recently fitted. The lights, badges, bumpers and front grille are all in fine condition as is the chrome. The rear-mounted full-size spare alloy wheel sits inside a smart original branded cover, the spare tyre is pristine and is a Yokohama – factory-fitted from new and never used. As you can see from the photos this is a very photogenic car and attracts all the right kind of attention wherever you go.
Step up into the smart interior and it’s hard to believe that this is a 2011 car. Wonderfully original throughout, the car looks much as it must have done when new. A new Apple CarPlay / Android Auto unit with DAB, Nav, Bluetooth and rear camera is so sympathetic its hard to tell its just been fitted, looking factory to the eye.
There’s only slight evidence of wear on the saddle-coloured leather seats which are heated and cooled as well as offering lumbar support, with the rear seats, if anything, looking never sat in. The factory rear seat entertainment screens are present together with original headphones and working, the dashboard, instruments and centre console are extremely clean and tidy, with no marks or scratches.
The carpet mats in the footwells look new, and underneath these the carpets are incredibly clean. The original factory rubber mat set are present as is the famed net cupholder and boot netting. The load bay is spotless, bar a few small scuffs on the backs of the rear seat plastic guard. The interior option list is astonishing, memory electric seats, rain sensor, heated windscreen, cruise with limiter, auto headlights, reversing camera, climate control and much more – the car must have been one of the most highly optioned G-Wagons delivered in the UK!

The Mechanics

  • Starts on first turn of the key and sounds fantastic
  • Clean and tidy engine bay
  • Recently serviced with front suspension renewed
The car starts readily, and slides neatly into ‘Drive’. The 3-litre engine sounds great, feels powerful on the pedal unlike the underpowered early W460 versions, the car pulls away smoothly and there’s no evidence of any issues.
The elevated view of the road gives a feeling of security, and the driving position is as comfortable as one would expect from a car renowned for its refinement as much as for its off-road ability. All the switchgear appears to work as it should, including the climate control which blows ice cold.
Under the bonnet, the engine looks as clean as you like and looks much like it must of done when new. Underneath the car, all looks to be in order, and there’s no evidence of corrosion or leaks. Mercedes recommends checking the front springs and shocks after ten years, the vendor prudently went to the expense of renewing these using OEM spec absorbers and springs. The recent service and works are reassuring and ensure future expense is kept to a minimum. The car is supplied with two sets of original remote keys.

The G-wagon remains a motoring icon, even after all these years, and this one is as good an example as you will find. It really is a one-off, with all its original accessories, astonishing specifications and that comprehensive service file. If you have always dreamed of investing in a G-Wagon look no further, you have found the one to buy.
