2010 Land Rover Defender 90

Highlights

  • Hugely desirable
  • Class-leading off-road performance
  • Factory original & unmodified

THE APPEAL

When it comes to 4x4 or off road vehicles there’s only one considered king, the Land Rover Defender. This iconic vehicle is a proven all terrain conqueror, making it hugely desirable for both the enthusiast as well as those looking to use the vehicle for day to day tasks that require something more than capable.

These utilitarian brutes weren’t built to be luxurious or comfortable nor were they developed to win a race, no the Defender was built to be rugged and ready for any brutal itinerary, which is why anyone who requires a competent off-roader chooses this icon.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • Service book stamped regularly
  • Three previous owners
First registered in September 2010 this Land Rover has spent its entire life in the Somerset region. It was used as a utilitarian work horse before coming into current ownership where the majority of its time is spent transporting the four legged members of the family. Included with the Defender are the original manufacturer's manual and service portfolio which contains regular records of servicing by the main dealer and local garage.

Current MOT and a few prior certificates are also included. Its recent use has become very infrequent with only 500 miles carried out in the last 12 months and therefore its requirement for the current owner has become unnecessary, especially with more motorways and less moorland now the norm.

THE INTERIOR

  • Areas of wear & tear
  • Aftermarket radio
  • Two seater.
Inside the Defender, you’re greeted with utilitarian simplicity. Black plastic is present throughout, no doubt installed to be hardwearing and tough, with only the aftermarket Pioneer stereo present to add a bit of excitement. The seats are showing signs of wear, with the driver’s containing a large tear and the passengers containing a paint like mark on the bolster.

It is evident the interior was designed to be as resilient as possible, with the majority of material used to be durable over luxurious. We’re told everything is operational, even though areas are a little bruised. Added rubber mats front and back bring further heavy-duty protection ready for further working life or overland fun.

THE EXTERIOR

  • Zermatt Silver Metallic
  • Minor wear throughout
  • Original factory appearance
Stocky, brutish and aggressive. Used by individuals of all class, the Defender it's a recognisable vehicle which gives off an instant sense of capability and importance, lets just say if a choice has to be made of who gets right of way in a narrow country lane, there’s only going to be one outcome.

The aesthetics play a factory in its performance too, the short front end for example allows the vehicle to take on steeper approaches and descents, something most 4x4 struggle with. Condition-wise, this SUV is in fair condition, but it wouldn't be a Defender without a few blemishes, there’s a few scratches throughout the paintwork and a few small dents too, but generally nothing extreme, just your usual wear. The bumpers are showing deterioration, with clear signs of age present. In conclusion, this twelve year old work livelihood servant is in pretty good shape.

THE MECHANICS

  • Last serviced April 2022 - 50 miles ago.
  • Differential oil changed March 2021 - 600 miles ago.
  • MOT until April 2023
During our visit we started and moved the car slightly to help the photographer. Ignition was easy and with no hesitation. The 2.4L turbo diesel sounds as you would expect, it’s not a Ferrari but it runs smooth and idles without any concern. Regular servicing has clearly been a key factor in keeping the vehicle in good operating health, the last of which was in April 2022 where fluids were checked and prior in 2021 where all filters were renewed, new oil including both differential fluids.

A new clutch was fitted in May 2021 and brakes in 2019 only 4,000 miles ago. Evidently, maintenance has been carried out as and when required with records mainly being kept in the manufacturer's service book. The engine is Ford's Duratorq, used in the Ford Transit as well as the London Taxi, both vehicles that tend to carry out giant mileages and are renowned for being efficient, reliable and refined. Just what you want if you are going to take a vehicle on an expedition into the middle of nowhere!

SUMMARY

A British beast, recognised world wide, this incredibly capable vehicle is a great addition to anyone's driveway, especially those that require something to go places normal cars can’t. This elite off-roader has become even more desirable in latter years, with many enthusiasts and countryside dwellers choosing this over newer and cheaper alternatives. It really is an icon and one that lives up to its reputation.
