Highlights
- Rare 6-speed manual option
- Beautifully maintained car
- Mid-mounted flat-six motoring at its best
The Appeal
Breaking away from the traditional rear-engine Porsche format, the Cayman is a more entry-level model in the brand’s line up. That being said with the mid-mounted layout, it surely its own uniquely attractive traits and this model in such great shape follows that trend.
This is an exemplary 987.2 Cayman, presented in beautiful shape inside and out. With relatively low mileage, this car would be excellent purchase, especially for anyone looking for their first Porsche experience.
History and Paperwork
- First registered in 2009
- Category S: impact damage to offside front wing and sill
- Serviced by Porsche Centre Sheffield from 2009 until 2015
- Independent specialist thereafter
- Frequently stamped service booklet
- Many invoices included in sale
- Current MOT until July 2023 – passed without advisories
The Interior
- Great looking interior in excellent shape
- Rare optional 6-speed manual gearbox
- Bose Speaker system
- Missing spare wheel, but genuine Porsche toolkit included
This 13-year-old car is seemingly still in its prime inside with excellently well-preserved leathers and plastics with the dashboard in particular presenting itself like new. The seats also for the most part look in great shape for a car that’s been driven over 60,000 miles. Though the kickplate on the driver’s side shows a few scrapes.
Throughout the interior are signs of this car’s high specification from the factory. The original owner opted for the uprated Bose speakers which should make any long trip enjoyable, along with the fairly rare 6-speed manual transmission. Its shifter knob sticks out with pride from in between the seats.
Further back, where an engine would sit in a traditional Porsche, is the boot where you’ll find the official Porsche toolkit and the space for a spare wheel though the actual wheel is missing.
The Exterior
- Simple yet elegant silver paint
- Great 987.2 generation Cayman styling
- Good condition wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres
- Brilliantly repaired damage to front offside wing
With flowing curves, an unaggressive overall demeanour and plenty of character, the original Cayman shape is certainly on Porsche pile of successful pieces of design and has paved the way for nearly twenty years of the car’s success. Coated in this simple yet beautiful silver paint which has seemingly survived 60,000 miles in excellent condition, the car looks great.
This is matched by the great Porsche wheels which do enough to embellish the car without stealing the show. The owner also praises the quality of the repair carried out on the offside front wing, which now shows no sign of damage.
Underneath, a few spots of corrosion on the surface have revealed themselves, but it wasn’t pointed out on the previous MOT so shouldn’t be anything serious. In fact, the most recent MOT showed no advisories whatsoever proving how well looked after this car is.
The Mechanics
- Rare manual 6-speed transmission
- Songful 261hp 2.9-litre flat-six
- Drives without issues
Lying just behind the driver and passenger is the 2.9-litre flat-six engine that gives this model its 261 horsepower all while crying out as a true Porsche should. The engine pairs well with the light, mid-engine chassis to make one of great driver’s cars.
Furthermore, the 6-speed manual that became the less popular option at the time due to the rise of the automatic PDK gearbox should make for an amazing driving experience.
And that is surely the case as the owner claims the car accelerates, brakes, changes gear and drives just as it should thanks to, once again, it being so well looked after.
Summary
The Cayman is a brilliant car and sits perfectly in the Porsche range just under the 911. Though the owner of this particular model claims it may be a “more complete and usable package than its 911 big brother.”
