The Appeal

With the Drophead Coupe of 2007 Rolls Royce aimed to reclaim the market for ultra luxurious cars.  Expensive, exclusive and as stylish as a luxury motorboat, the new car did exactly that.  But the car’s winning ace was how it drove.  This was no big luxury barge: thanks to its clever aluminium spaceframe construction it was remarkably nimble and agile for a 2.6tonne car.
At over £310,000 new, just 2,000 Drophead Coupes were built during a nine year production run.  This low mileage, low owner Drophead Coupe dials up the rarity by adding a bespoke Mansory Bel Air body kit to firm up the svelte lines.  The car is in excellent, unmarked condition and comes with full Rolls Royce service history.  The Seller tells us that it will be sold with 12 months MOT and another service by Rolls Royce.  It looks stunning and compared to the cost of a new one seems remarkable value for what is surely peak GT motoring.

The Interior

  • Cream leather interior in excellent condition
  • Contrasting black carpets and black piano wood veneers
  • Central infotainment system with satnav and premium Lexicon sound system
  • Rolls Royce umbrellas in the front wings accessed via the A pillars
  • Remarkable self-cleaning ashtrays in doors
  • Beautiful blend of tradition and technology
  • Piano black wood trim on roof cover
Rolls Royce’s famous claim to make the best cars in the world is firmly supported by the interior of this sumptuous car.  Luxurious doesn’t quite do it justice.
The very high quality cream leather seats and piano black veneers provide a beautiful contrast in this carefully laid out interior that combines classic Rolls Royce cues with modern technology.  The classic chrome ‘organ pull’ vents sit alongside a modern infotainment system that is discreetly hidden behind the Rolls Royce clock.  Similarly, the automatic gear selector is on the steering column, just like classic Rolls Royces of previous years.
Reflecting the high price of this car when it was new, the interior is very highly appointed and includes electric heated front seats, rear camera, satnav, premium sound system, self-cleaning ashtrays and even Rolls Royce umbrellas in the front wings.  There are even a pair of Rolls Royce pens hidden in the dashboard.  The glovebox contains switches for automatic and manual operation of the iconic Spirit of Ecstasy.
As befits a Rolls Royce, where the emphasis is on unruffled travel, there is no rev counter just a dial showing the percentage of power being used by the engine at any given time.
The images of this car indicate that the interior is in excellent condition.  The signs of age on the interior fittings are very minor, limited to very slight creases and flex in the leather of the driver’s seat base and a small patch of wear on the driver’s footwell overmat.  The rear seats, which look spacious, are also in excellent condition.
There are a handful of scuffs through the paintwork on both door sills and on the plastic sill trim on the passenger side.
The boot carpet and trim is in excellent condition.  The Phantom has an unusual split-fold boot opening.  The boot contains a complete factory toolkit and first aid kit.

The Exterior

  • Excellent black metallic paintwork
  • Mansory Bel Air bodykit and sports exhaust
  • Brushed stainless steel bonnet and windscreen surround
  • Series II Drophead Coupe front end
  • Unmarked 24inch black alloy wheels
  • Carbon fibre wing vents
Rolls Royce developed the Drophead Coupe from its 100EX show car, the production car arriving virtually unchanged.  The influences of luxury motorboats and bespoke Rolls Royces of preceding years are obvious in the car’s flowing lines, bold frontal treatment and the distinctive brushed stainless steel bonnet and windscreen surround.
The rearward opening coach doors are a clever touch that are a nod to tradition whilst distinguishing this Rolls Royce from virtually any other car on the road.
The car is a clever blend of tradition and technology, the hand-crafted bodywork disguising a clever aluminium spaceframe construction.  This helps reduce the car’s overall weight and contributes to what Car magazine described as remarkable nimbly and agile handling for a 2.6tonne car.
This car has been fitted with a Bel Air bodykit by renowned Rolls Royce tuner Mansory.  This includes modified sills and discreet front and rear spoilers as well as a sports exhaust.  Elsewhere there are subtle carbon fibre finishes to the wing vents and lower edge of the front spoiler.
The front end has been upgraded to the later Series II style.
The vast convertible roof appears to be in excellent condition and works correctly.
The bodywork is in excellent condition for the age and mileage of the car.  The only marks we could find in the photographs are very minor.  There is a small number of stone chips to the front bumper and on the carbon trim on the nearside front.  There is also a small scuff on the offside carbon fibre front bumper trim.  The offside lower front light is misted with water ingress.
Elsewhere there is a small stone chip on the front edge of the nearside sill and the nearside exhaust tailpipe shows slight damage on the edge.
The car sits on attractive 24inch black alloy wheels equipped with Cityracing Powertrac tyres.  The nearside rear wheel displays a small scuff on the side and the offside front wheel has a small area of kerbing on the edge.
The underside of the car looks very good and there were no structural advisories on the last MOT.

The Mechanics

  • 6.75litre V12 Rolls Royce engine generating 453bhp
  • 0-60 in 5.6seconds
  • Full Rolls Royce service history
  • Will be sold with fresh Rolls Royce service and new MOT
  • 6spd automatic
  • Rear wheel drive
6.75litres is a classic displacement for Rolls Royces, echoing back to the firm’s models of the 1960s and 1970s.  In the Drophead Coupe, however, V8 power is replaced with ultra smooth V12 propulsion.  This hand-built motor is good for just shy of 500bhp, enough to propel this car to 60mph in 5.6seconds, although such sprightly activity seems out of keeping for this most relaxing of cars.
Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a 6spd automatic gearbox.
The car has five Rolls Royce service stamps, the most recent 2,000 miles ago. The MOT history verifies the mileage.  The car will be sold freshly serviced and with a new 12 months MOT.

Summary

The sumptuous Rolls Royce Drophead Coupe seems to be much more than a car concerned with the humdrum task of getting from A to B.  Its flowing lines, echoing luxury motorboats, suggest that every journey will be an occasion, a chance to immerse the occupants in a distinctly Rolls Royce luxury experience.
Just 2,000 Drophead Coupes were built during the car’s nine year production run.  This early example looks arresting with its distinctive Mansory body kit and contrasting black over cream colour scheme.  The low owners, low mileage, fresh MOT and full Rolls Royce service history are all reasons to consider this most distinctive and luxurious of GT cars.
