The convertible GTC arrived three years later providing the few lucky owners with a sublime convertible GT car capable of over 190 mph and 0-60 mph in 5 seconds whilst cosseting its occupants in exquisite luxury and comfort. It remains a compelling package that’s hard to compete with by others.

The Interior
- Featuring a sublime interior with all the Mulliner Specification refinements in evidence
- Presenting in excellent overall condition and with the ambiance of a private members club
- A highly specified car with all the expected Bentley features and extras
This GTC’s interior is fitted and finished to the highest standards and firmly in keeping with Bentley traditions and reputation. Known in upholstery circles as “Bentley Stitching,” the seats and door card panels are finished in Magnolia hides double stitched into a distinctive diamond pattern.
The front seats are not just in great condition but are also fully electrically adjustable and heated. They also exhibit the Bentley “flying B” emblem stitched into the headrests in dark, contrasting thread. This refinement is part of the Mulliner Specification of this car. The Mulliner Specification also extends to drilled alloy sports foot pedals, dark stained burr walnut veneer accents, and the knurled chrome and hide sports gear selector.
The entertainment system has been updated with the fitment of a Kenwood touch screen head unit. This equips the car with Bluetooth connectivity, Garmin satellite navigation and DAB radio. A really useful and welcome upgrade. In many ways the star of this exquisite interior may, however, be the analogue dashboard clock manufactured by Breitling.
The Exterior
- This example benefits from a highly sophisticated colourway being finished in Diamond Black Pearl paintwork
- The wheels are the 20-inch split rim examples included in the Mulliner Specification
- The external presentation of the car is very good indeed, truly belying its age
The sophisticated Diamond Black Pearl paintwork of the example suits the Raul Pires and Dirk van Braeckel design very well indeed. The mesh grill, faired in quad headlamps and large “flying B” emblem on the nose leaves you in no doubt about the sporting pretensions and capabilities of this GT legend.
In case you remained unconvinced, the large, 20-inch, seven-spoke split rim alloy wheels should leave you in no doubt at all. The huge 275/35 Pirelli tyres are more than just for show but are required to help convert the car’s prodigious power and torque into forward momentum.
The black mohair hood appears to be in excellent condition with no nicks or tears noticed or reported. It is understood to operate quickly and smoothly at the touch of a button, just as Bentley intended. Even the commodious boot is finely trimmed in hard wearing grey carpet. The holder for the reflective safety triangle is even given the Bentley treatment by being a dark leather item, deeply embossed with the flying B emblem.
The Mechanics
- The GTC is fitted with the behemoth 6L, twin turbocharged W12 engine
- Originally rated at an enormous 552 bhp and 479 Ib-ft of torque
- Those impressive forces are fed to all four wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission
The mechanical specification of the GTC can’t fail to impress such was Bentley’s desire to produce a GT car firmly in keeping with their long and proud sporting heritage. As such no shortcuts were taken resulting in a car that could top 190 mph and accelerate to 100 mph in a mere 11 seconds or so. In order to ensure this eye-widening performance could be effectively deployed in all conditions, a Torsen-based permanent four-wheel drive system is fitted as standard.
The owner reports that this car “drives superbly and everything works,” he also maintains “it drives like a dream and is the nicest I have ever owned.” Given the fastidious maintenance this car has received that may come as no surprise. The service book is full of stamps and the current owner has attended to some useful maintenance during his recent tenure. This includes a full oil and filer change and replacement of the spark plugs earlier this year, all twelve of them!
Summary
The Bentley GTC is a statement car of the highest order. Being the first car produced under Volkswagen’s ownership, no effort or investment was spared in the development of this GT hero car. The specification sheet for this car is huge and details only the best materials and highest level of mechanical engineering available at the time.
This is a fine example of the breed too, offering an appealing and popular colourway and featuring the sought after Mulliner Specification. To find that a car of this calibre is available at a price point of a fairly mediocre new car is frankly astounding and represents a compelling opportunity. If you are looking for a statement car that should prove a pleasure and privilege to own, then few others will compare to this Bentley GTC.
