The Appeal
The L322 is the generation of Range Rover that gets under your skin. The first wave of the new wave, it remixed the Range Rover formula for the 21st century, and its crisp design has aged perfectly. There may have been two newer generations since, but the L322 of 2001-2012 still looks modern and soberly stylish. Jeremy Clarkson famously loves them too, calling it ‘the best car in the world’, and he’s certainly got a decent frame of reference to base such a statement on.
This supercharged 2007 model is a particularly charming example of the breed. Affectionately nicknamed ‘Charlie’ – the owner will be happy to explain why – it had been bought with the intention of keeping it for only six months or so, and that was over two-and-a-half years ago. See what we mean about them getting under your skin? These venerable machines are hard to quit.
The current owner (who’s only its fourth, with all details of former keepers and history carefully documented in the file) previously worked at the prestigious Jaguar Land Rover dealership Guy Salmon in Thames Ditton, Surrey – so he knew first-hand that a customer going to Guy Salmon meant high quality and excellent customer service, not the cheapest price. The fact that this is where this Range Rover originally came from helped to seal the deal – as did the highly reassuring paperwork file, and the fact that it had been treated to a raft of Overfinch upgrades in 2014 at a cost of almost £8,000, including the full bodykit, badging throughout, illuminated sill floorplates, performance exhaust system badging throughout and an engine remap to suit the exhaust. It’s also had a fully upgraded sound system fitted, including a Kenwood touchscreen head unit with remote control, plus an Alpine subwoofer and amplifier in the boot, working with the factory Harmon/Kardon speakers – a setup that would cost deep into the thousands to replicate.
The cherished registration number is included in the sale, as are a set of roof bars, theoriginal Overfinch sill covers (the owner has swapped out the Overfinch for a pair of side steps, but this is easily reversible)and two keys – one of which has a new case and battery.
This, then, is really the ultimate spec for an L322: it’s got the desirable supercharged V8 engine, the gloriously luxurious interior, tasteful upgrades to the aesthetics and audio (plus, of course, that addictive burble through the Overfinch exhausts), and it’s all backed up by a comprehensive history folder and the knowledge that it’s been pampered by an owner who’s truly cherished it. How can you resist…?

The Condition
- Stylish black-on-black colour scheme
- Overfinch bodykit and exhausts
The black-on-black theme suits the L322 very well, the Java Black paint neatly complemented by the tinted windows and rear light clusters and blacked-out Range Rover badges. The owner takes pride in keeping it clean with comprehensive detailing and waxing, and the quality of the paintwork is impressive – a few stone-chips as you’d expect of a 2007 vehicle, but overall it presents very well indeed. There’s a small paint bloom on the front bumper, a few small marks on front inside door pillar where the seatbelt hasn’t fully retracted and the door closed on it, and little scuffs to the edge of the rear bumper, but these minor matters are the only noticeable blemishes.
The Range Rover wears 22” SuperSport alloy wheels, which are in tidy condition and shod with 285/35 tyres; they also do a great job of showcasing the mighty Overfinch/Brembo brakes. The owner has helpfully provided photos of the disc and pad condition, as well as pictures of the underside while up on a ramp – we can see that it’s generally all in good order, the sort of Rangie that’s lived its life on the road rather than bouncing off craggy rocks and with nothing to trouble an MOT tester. A couple of exhaust brackets could do with attention, but there’s little beyond that to worry about.
Inside, we find acres more black, this time leather-lined and tastefully appointed, with complementing piano black dash trim. The seats are in great condition with very minimal evidence of wear. You’ll note the odd usage mark here and there – for example, evidence of a dog guard having been fitted in the past, and marks to the load space headlining from doing the tip run – but nothing you wouldn’t expect of such a utilitarian load-lugger. On the whole, it’s a very impressive machine inside and out – and the earth-shaking bass and top-end fidelity from the upgraded sound system is something truly special.

The Mechanics
- Sought-after supercharged V8
- Impressive Overfinch-spec brakes and exhaust
The Range Rover has been looked after by Elmwood Vehicles in this owner’s tenure (being a TVR specialist, they understand performance vehicles and V8s), and all work carried out is painstakingly documented in the paperwork file. The engine fires willingly into life, idles evenly and pulls strongly through the revs, and the owner is keen to highlight that everything works as it should – the air suspension works fine and holds pressure, all the gearbox settings have been checked - high, low, terrain - and the parking brake shows no sign of seizure. We can see from the history that the supercharger received a new belt and tensioner in 2019, and more recently the vehicle has been treated to a new expansion tank and thermostat.
The ride is reportedly ‘as smooth as silk’ with no knocks, bangs or rattles, and the Overfinch/Brembo brakes (with 6-pot front calipers and 4-pot rears) offer remarkable retardation. And best of all, with 425bhp to play with, this luxuriously equipped machine accelerates at an astonishing rate that physics would surely demand it has no right to do. A properly impressive package.

Summary
When those rampaging V8 horses are unleashed, the deep rumble from the Overfinch exhausts combines with the addictive supercharger induction noise – it’s a mechanical symphony, pure and simple. Of course, there’s far more to this Range Rover than hooligan thrust and entertaining noises; this is a refined and beautifully appointed machine with a very high specification, and it’s happy to waft serenely with just as much panache. And it can do all the tough stuff too – these things were engineered to climb every mountain and ford every stream, so it could readily shield you from the apocalypse with aplomb.
Most importantly of all, the overall condition and the paperwork file show us that this is a Range Rover that’s been cherished and looked after by proper enthusiasts. There are a lot of L322s on the market, but finding one like this is rare.
