The Appeal
In the early 1990s, Porsche’s engineers embarked on their single most important project in years. The brief of Project 986 was to emulate the appeal of the classic 911 sports car in a package that could be sold for less than half the price. To create a ‘Baby 911’ for the mass sports car market. It would become the car that saved Porsche and returned the brand to profitability.
The Boxster debuted in 1996 and was a massive, instant hit, selling in volumes that Porsche had never seen before. In 2004, the 986 begat the 987 – essentially the same car, but with and improved engine range and a new body more in line with the rest of the Porsche model range, with neater oval headlamps and a vastly modernised cabin.
Today, just as when it was new, the 987 is a hugely desirable sports car – a modern classic with one of the finest names in automotive history and handling and performance to match.
This example was with its most recent owner since 2015 and is genuine low mileage car, having covered just 43k miles from new. It’s clearly been cherished and well-loved. It’s also the range-topping Boxster S Sports Edition, with six-speed manual transmission, and is presented in lovely, unspoilt condition.
There are few sports cars with the cachet of a supercar that are as accessible as the 987 Boxster – which has to be regarded as one of the best Porsche models ever made. Its all-round ability is astonishing, its performance impressive and its handling incredible. Then there’s the Germanic build quality and surprisingly plush levels of comfort, which make it a high-performance car you can enjoy on a daily basis without any real compromise.
All of those elements combine to make it a terrifically appealing car overall, but the condition, maintenance history and presentation of this example make it stand out even further. It’s a great example of the breed.
