The Appeal
A Jaguar Ford fusion made a sharp rise in the compact executive saloon market thanks to the launch of the X-Type in 2001. The shooting-break variant quickly followed, being Jaguar’s first estate car in series production, as well as the first Jaguar model designed by Ian Callum. Thanks to an independently-opening tailgate and large boot space, Jaguar were able to combine a need for conversational practicalities with their aesthetic attention to detail, as well as the reliability of the Ford foundation.
While X-Types sold over 350,000 examples worldwide, just circa 10,000 petrol examples were produced in estate form making them pretty rare. Popularl in 4-cylinder 2.0 or 2.2-litre diesel form but also optioned with a 6-cylinder 2.5 or 3.0-litre V6 powerplant. Like the majority of petrolheads, it is tempting to gravitate towards the ‘top of the range’ variations so this example will pique the interest of the thrill-seekers thanks to the 3.0-litre V6 producing 231 bhp matched a four-wheel-drive system which provides sure-footed grip, and a respectable 0-60 mph time of 7.3 seconds. This example also happens to be a ’Sovereign’ providing the driver with additional luxuries such as a walnut dash trim, multi-function wood rimmed steering wheel, heated front seats, SatNav and entertainment system upgrades.
Sporty, quintessentially British, and incredibly practical - a very elegant modern classic, which currently seems to represent very good value
