The Honda S2000 made its debut on April 15, 1999 – a significant date as it was the very day of Honda Motor Company’s 50th anniversary.

It had first been seen as a concept car at the 1995 Frankfurt Motor Show in 1995, and the public reaction was enough to convince Honda to build it, so the Japanese company rewarded itself with a birthday present. A very, very cool birthday present.

It was – and still is – an absolutely terrific car, powered by a punchy VTEC (Variable Valve Timing & Lift Electronic Control) engine that really comes alive at the top of its rev range.

The VTEC system, designed to outsmart Japan’s tax regime that’s based on engine size alone, changes the cam profile and provides better fuel consumption at low revs and increased performance at high revs, without the need for forced induction.

The end result, in the S2000’s case, is a light, powerful, ultra-high-revving rear-drive sports car that is an enthusiastic driver’s dream – tail happy, but effortlessly powerful and hugely rewarding to drive.

If you’re in the market for an exhilarating modern classic then the S2000 takes some beating – it’s docile enough to live with every day if you drive it gently, yet when it really comes to life it’s one of the most rapid and entertaining cars of its era.
