The Appeal
The Brera was a new kind of car for Alfa Romeo. The kind of Alfa you could buy with your head, as well as your heart. Combining nigh-on German levels of build quality with gorgeous Pininfarina styling proved a masterstroke and the Brera sold very well indeed. No Alfa Romeo range should be complete without a Spider, (take notes Stellantis), and a convertible Brera joined the lineup in 2006.
To some Alfisti, this may sound like sacrilege, but the diesel version was really the one to have. Utilising the common-rail 2.4-litre, five-cylinder unit that’ll be familiar to Volvo drivers, the JTDM Breras were reliable, exceedingly fuel efficient and had plenty of torque to play with in every gear. They drove exceedingly well and that off-beat warbling five-cylinder motor feels altogether less ‘diesel-y’ than you might imagine…
This 2007 example has only covered 48,268 miles and a study of the original service book shows it’s been very well maintained. Resplendent in black, which hides the black fabric roof, this is a very handsome car and the ultra-low mileage ensures there’s little in the way of wear to report. During present ownership, the vendor has serviced the car themselves and kept it indoors, ensuring its original, pampered state is preserved for the next custodian. A hattrick of advisory-free MOTs confirms that it’s ready to enjoy.
The History and Paperwork
- 48,268 miles
- Purchased from a dealership earlier in 2024
- Recent major service including cambelt and water pump kit, new brake discs and pads all round
- Stored indoors during present ownership
- While lacking an extensive paperwork file, there are numerous service stamps in the original book and several accompanying invoices
The Condition
- In line with the low mileage the bodywork looks in fantastic condition for the age
- The underside looks clean with no signs of notable corrosion
- The vendor notes that part of the passenger-side mirror has cracked and fallen off, but otherwise, there’s little of note to report
- The alloy wheels look smart with minimal kerbing
- Handsome black paintwork with few visible blemishes - impressive considering black shows up imperfections more than most colours
- The folding roof presents very well for its age, including the rear window
- The vendor demonstrates that the roof fits well, folds correctly and the headlining looks smart with no obvious indication of leaks
- The Interior looks is in great shape overall and we’re informed that all electrics do as they should
- The vendor notes the usual slight wear to the driver's seat bolster but remarks that the leather is otherwise free from notable wear
The Mechanics
- 2.4-litre five-cylinder JTDM
- Six-speed manual gearbox
- Very good service history; last service done by the vendor with Mobil 1 oil and Bosch parts including fuel filter, gates and cambelt
- The vendor remarks that it “drives as it should, is amazing on fuel being diesel but feels like a petrol and still drives like new due to low mileage”
- We’re informed that everything feels tight, the controls are responsive and the suspension is well-damped
- The D5 engine reportedly starts readily and works superbly, with a lovely five-cylinder sound
- We’re told that the gears engage smoothly and the brakes work well
- No MOT advisories
