2006 TVR Tuscan 2

Highlights

• Very low mileage
• Service history
• Stunning bodywork
• Gorgeous interior
• Raw performance

The Background

TVR’s illustrious history was founded way back in 1947 by Trevor Wilkinson and he built the first
Car in Blackpool in 1949 utilising a multi-tubular chassis with Morris 8 mechanicals, a Ford 100E engine and his own metal body design. These humble beginnings spawned a huge range of subsequent TVR models including the Griffith 200, Grantura, and Tasmin, to name but a few, and in 1967, the original Tuscan.
The later third Tuscan design, launched in 1999, pays homage to that original Tuscan but features
TVR’s own straight-six engine designed by Al Melling - the Speed Six. Initially installed in the Cerbera, a 3.6-litre producing around 350bhp and a torquier 4.0-litre version with 360bhp options were available and later even more powerful versions in the form of the ’S’ and so called ‘Red Rose’.
The Tuscan’s two-seater curved glass fibre body, tubular steel chassis and classic drivetrain set up still conforms to TVR’s philosophy of producing a lightweight 50/50 balanced performance machine that looks as hot as it goes.

The History

This highly desirable Tuscan 2 offers better handling than the earlier versions. Built under the
ownership of Nikolai Smolenski, it is said to be the best quality car TVR ever produced and includes a slightly slower steering rack, geometry improvements and different spring rates which
improved the ride quality without compromising the excitement factor. Cosmetic changes included the repositioning and styling of the front and rear lights and a redesigned interior.
First registered on the 10th May 2006, this low mileage example appears to have been very well looked after and with under 20,000 documented miles on the clock, it has therefore only covered an average of around 1,333 miles a year over the last 15 years.
Believed to be the 360bhp version, the current owner bought this stunning Tuscan 2 on the 17th September 2014 and has also owned other TVR’s and performance cars. He has decided to sell simply because he doesn’t have the time to enjoy it.

The Paperwork

The V5 is present in the owners name and a current ‘Pass’ MOT (with no advisories), expires in
August 2022. Earlier MOT’s corroborate the car’s steady mileage and indicates 8 previous passes. The car is currently on SORN.
There is an assortment of service and parts receipts going back to 2006. Some work has been carried out, firstly by The TVR Centre, Hertfordshire and in 2009 by authorised dealers, Dreadnaught in Scotland. As recently as August 2021 a full pre-MOT check and 6K service was carried out. This included attending to a valve shim adjustment, oil and filter change and a new   n/s/r TVR brake calliper.

The Interior

TVR have always been unashamedly unconventional in their design approach, and this Tuscan 2 interior is definitely no exception. The flamboyant but ergonomic cockpit is just as curvy as the exterior and is highlighted by a solid aluminium dash panel, gear knob, handbrake, switches and trim.
Once the security key is inserted and turned an array of lights greet you and the fuel pump springs into action. The ‘Start/Stop’ button now glows green giving you permission to fire up the Speed-Six. A mixture of digital and analogue instrumentation adornes this impressive cabin.
The leather dash, seats and stitching have a high quality feel about them and still look fresh. The seats are body hugging and extremely comfortable and show minimal signs of wear. The steering wheel incorporates the wash wiper and main beam buttons and the centre column features the door opening knob and electric window buttons along with a Pioneer audio system. The floor-hinged foot pedals, despite having a long travel (which does help with power delivery), are light and easy to use when sitting in this fantastic low-slung driving position.

The Exterior

TVR’s sleek styling is on top form with this Tuscan 2. The curvy and exotic body looks especially imposing in black, the bonnet styling is undoubtedly unique and of course the door hinge line is instantly recognisable. The fibreglass and gel coat on this example shows no signs of crazing or cracking and the paint has a deep shine and appears free of scratches. There are a few minor stone chips in the usual places, but nothing major.
In coupe form, the car is practical but a definite bonus is the easily removable targa-style top and removable rear window option turning it into a convertible with a roll bar. The huge deep boot is in good condition and is also a bonus capable of accommodating the composite roof and rear window plus a weekend bag or two.
The lights, moulded covers, mirrors and windows all seem in good order and the electric door opening buttons operate as they should (and offer a better level of security than a conventional door handle). The owner assures us that the chassis is in good condition and may have been wax oiled. Obviously the current MOT should substantiate this but being a low-slung car, we were unable to take a proper peek during the photography session.

The Original alloy TVR wheels present well, appear free of kerb damage, and are shod with Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres which all have a good level of tread remaining. (235/40R18 fronts and 245/40R18 rears).

The Mechanics

The 3,996cc Speed Six is clearly the heart of this TVR. Producing around 360bhp at 7,000rpm, the all aluminium, in-line, six cylinder engine, offers brutal ‘old school’ out and out performance but with flexible power delivery. Third gear is good for 110 mph! and you shouldn’t need to work hard to get there either. 0-62 is achievable in around 4.2 seconds in a car weighing just 1100kg.
Electronic aids are scarce - power assisted steering is provided to help with those sharp turn ins, but beware there is no traction control or ABS. Having said that, the drilled brake discs and TVR callipers should pull up effectively. The owner assures us that the five-speed gearbox is smooth and the suspension and steering precise.
Regular maintenance is crucial with all TVR’s, but being relatively simple this shouldn’t be arduous and there is plenty of servicing expertise out there now. As mentioned, this Tuscan 2 appears to have been well maintained, and having covered just under 20,000 miles, is barely run-in and should be reliable for years to come. We lifted the ‘nose’ bonnet to reveal the fans and fluid top-up access, but we were unable to open the service bonnet. Everything visible looks in very good order though.

The Appeal

This Tuscan 2 captures the essence of a hardcore TVR and was designed to be more user-friendly - it can be very tractable and smooth around town and a howling brut on the open road.
It may not be the perfect choice as everyday transportation, but as a thrilling occasional sports car it is hard to beat.
This well built TVR is in exceptional condition and is ready (and deserves) to be driven. It’s stunning looks, relative practicality and raw performance is sure to offer a grin factor 10!
