The Appeal
For many, “convertible” is synonymous with delicate sports cars, perhaps an MGB or Alfa Spider. But throughout its illustrious history, Mercedes-Benz has shown that a convertible can be as solidly made, luxurious and well-appointed as any executive saloon.
The C Class-based CLK was a brilliant product which it has remained something of a closely guarded secret. The soft-top (A209) variant was the last car built ever built at Karmann’s Osnabrück plant, so holds an esteemed place in motoring history.
The owner of this lovely 2006 example remembers these cars fondly from their time working in the car industry and so decided to purchase one in April 2023. This one has the coveted 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine paired with Mercedes-Benz’s excellent 7G-Tronic automatic gearbox. This combination affords the driver great flexibility, equally suited to motorway cruising or a more spirited drive down a winding pass.
The car has been very well looked after which is evidenced by the detailed service record and it presents superbly throughout considering its age. We’re informed that the CLK drives very well and the automatic folding roof works exactly as it should. It comes with a long MOT and is ready to go.
The History and Paperwork
74957 miles
Three former registered keepers
Supplied by Mercedes-Benz Bromley and spent most of its life in that location, as the service record confirms, likely until July 2020 when it was serviced by Simon Harrison Cars in Oldbury
Original service book with 10 stamps from Mercedes-Benz Bromley up to 39,000 miles
The vendor has email confirmation from Mercedes-Benz of 2 further services also by Mercedes-Benz Bromley, after they went to electronic records, and these are dated June 18th at 46,000 miles and June 19th at 53,000 miles
Another service was completed by Eden Park, Bromley, dated July 20th at 61,000 miles at which point the car changed hands and has one more stamp, by an independent specialist at 70,000 miles dated March 22nd
The vendor has invoices for the work completed since then at a local independent specialist in Hampshire
The vendor had a service performed in April 2023 at 73,000 miles
Further work carried out earlier in 2024 and MOT renewed in July
The Condition
‘Obsidian Black’ over ‘Cappuccino’ leather
Commendably straight and bright for its age
There’s naturally some light wear and tear but nothing especially notable
The paint and lacquer, look very smart, as do the various chrome trims
The vendor notes some minor damage to the from splitter trim underneath, which was there when they bought the vehicle as well as kerb damage to two of the alloy wheels
Stored under a cover on the vendor’s driveway which has helped preserve the roof fabric
The roof mechanism reportedly operates well with no known issues, stowing away neatly under the hard-shell cover
Light age-commensurate wear to the seats
No colour transfer to the seat squabs
The ruched leather appears free from heavy wear besides some creasing to driver’s outer bolster
We understand all the cabin electrics/systems to be in good working order
The Mechanics
3.0-litre V6 petrol (M272)
7G-Tronic gearbox
Both nearside and offside front lower suspension arm ball joints replaced earlier this year
Recent headlamp adjustment by Mercedes-Benz Fareham
Neither key works with the central locking - the vendor has replaced the batteries but they assume they may need to be re-coded
The vendor comments: “It is lovely to drive with the roof down and allows you to enjoy the sounds of the engine and the performance of the car”
