The Background
Designed to take on the likes of the BMW M5 and Mercedes’ various AMG-badged super saloons such as the E55 AMG, the Jaguar S-Type R was revealed to the world during 2002 to widespread critical acclaim, with plentiful praise for its 4.2-litre supercharged V8 engine and impressive performance.
Having been on sale for a number of years, the S-Type was heavily face-lifted in 2003, and again in 2005. New front and rear bumpers, a redesigned boot lid with subtle spoiler, new infotainment system with navigation and a multi-function steering wheel were all added, which not only transformed the look of the S-Type R but also improved the user experience.
The History
Finished in the timeless and very attractive colour combination of Lunar Grey over a duo-tone Charcoal and Saville Grey leather interior, this S-Type has proven to be a reliable daily driver throughout the vendor’s ownership and has been fastidiously maintained with yearly servicing and a fully-stamped service record.
From the factory, this is a very highly optioned example of the S-Type R, with numerous additional items fitted to the vehicle throughout the years. These factory options and additional items include the touch-screen sat nav, phone connectivity, 6-disc CD changer, USB and aux inputs for the stereo, heated windscreen, heated and electronically adjustable front seats with memory function, Alpine audio system and electric mirrors.
So, with such an extensive history, long list of options and dependable reliability, why would the vendor sell up, we hear you ask? Well, it’s quite simple really. The problem is with the vendor, not the car - unfortunately, chronic back issues force the sale so that the vendor can get a larger Jaguar, in the shape of an X350 XJ.
The Paperwork
Included with the vehicle is a fully stamped service record, original Jaguar handbook, V5 ownership document, MOT certificates, touch-screen navigation handbook, leather document holder and Jaguar book pack.
The Interior
The cabin of this ‘big cat’ is a true credit to Jaguar’s design team, as it still looks surprisingly modern despite being 15 years old. The interior presents in outstanding condition throughout and very little in the way of wear-and-tear.
The seats are all in excellent shape, with virtually no sign of any wear to the base or outer seat bolsters which would usually be present on a vehicle of this mileage. The headliner is in great shape, as are the carpets and dashboard.
Everything in the cabin works exactly as it should, and there are no reported faults or warning lights present on the dashboard.
The Exterior
As with the interior, the bodywork and paint on this S-Type R is in very good condition, with only minor wear present which is commensurate with the age and mileage of the vehicle along with a couple of more noticeable marks.
The front end has a very light smattering of stone chips which is to be expected, there are also two very small scratches under the drivers door handle, which have very carefully been touched in with the correct paint, colour matched.
All of the body panels look to be lovely and straight, with even shut lines and no visual sign of any accident damage sustained during or prior to the vendor’s ownership. The vehicle has been fitted with a set of aftermarket wind deflectors on the front windows, though these are easily removable should the new owner wish to do so.
All four wheels are in great condition, with only a few light scuffs and marks to be seen on the nearside wheels in particular. While they certainly present well as they sit, a full wheel refurbishment would bring them back in line with the condition of the rest of the bodywork.
The Mechanicals
Underneath the voluminous bonnet, the 4.20-litre Eaton-supercharged V8 engine looks to be in fine fettle, though due to the numerous engine trays and covers fitted it is difficult to ascertain the condition of the engine with any certainty.
The suspension turrets look to be nice and solid, as does the wheel well where the battery, spare tyre and tool kit is located.
Once again, there are no reported faults here, and the latest MOT exam on 09 March 2021 was a first-time pass with advisories for an inoperable number plate lamp, a nail in the rear nearside tyre and the rear brake pads wearing thin.
The latter of these issues has been resolved by the vendor, with the vehicle receiving new front and rear discs and pads during the most recent service, which was carried out during March 2021 at 95,735 miles.
Included with the vehicle is a spare air-conditioning condenser (though the vendor informs us that there are no issues with the A/C on this vehicle) a set of eight coil packs, spare upper steering column and a paint ‘touch in’ kit.
The Appeal
Don't be deceived by the Jaguar S-type R’s understated exterior. Beneath those svelt curves lies the heart of a GT. One minute you can be pottering around the village the next you could be setting it up for a track day. With a declared 0 to 100km in just 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 252kph, this 5 seat, leather clad, fully optioned saloon car can embarrass many sports cars.
As the vendor has proven, the S-Type R is an excellent long-distance ‘daily driver’ for the discerning motorist looking to stand out from the crowd, enjoy a thumping great supercharged V8 up front, and yet still arrive at their destination is complete and utter comfort.
As the vendor has proven, the S-Type R is an excellent long-distance ‘daily driver’ for the discerning motorist looking to stand out from the crowd, enjoy a thumping great supercharged V8 up front, and yet still arrive at their destination is complete and utter comfort.
Presenting in very good condition throughout and with an extensive service record, numerous spare parts and verified mileage, this 2006 Jaguar S-Type R is an excellent example of the British ‘super saloon’ and is simply in need of a new owner to enjoy it for many more years to come.
