Highlights
- 3.5-litre, 268bhp V6
- Amazing history file
- Incredible specification
The Appeal
With its first SLK, Mercedes-Benz set a new trend for power-operated retractable hardtops, which offered greater stiffness and refinement than traditional soft-top roadsters and were altogether more mature.
The first generation of SLK, the R170, was hugely popular from the outset but later developed a reputation for indifferent build quality. The R171 that followed was measurably better – and that’s what we have here.
It’s a truly lovely example of the second-generation SLK from enthusiast ownership, and with an impressive maintenance record. Having only covered 60,500 miles from new, it’s probably one of the best SLK 350s on the market today.
The History and Paperwork
- Original book pack, manuals and stereo remote
- Service book fully stamped to 60,050 miles in 2021
- Brochure
- Tracker documentation
- UK V5C and old MOTs
- Original bill of sale
The SLK is supplied with its original book pack containing all handbooks, security and stereo documents and a dealership directory.
There’s also a service book stamped all the way through from PDI to a full service and cam belt tensioner replacement in May 2021, at 60,050 miles.
Also included is the original bill of sale – the first owner traded in a Ford Focus 1.4 LX in 2005, so the SLK was certainly a step up!
The Interior
- Airscarf system
- Incredible specification
- Beautiful condition with no obvious issues
The SLK has an incredibly high specification including memory seats, steering wheel and mirrors, , heated leather seats, Mercedes COMAND Satnav and DVD player, cruise control and speed limiter, parking sensors front and rear, auto Xenon headlamps, air con and Mercedes Logo puddle door lights.
In addition, it has an enhanced Vario-Roof operation courtesy of a “Smart Top” Canbus module, which allows for the roof to be raised and lowered remotely using the key fob.
One of the most desirable options on the SLK is its Airscarf system, which blows warm air around the driver’s neck to keep them warm during open-top cruising.
The car is also fitted with a Tracker security system and Parrott Bluetooth hands-free kit.
The Exterior
- Rare Cubanite Silver
- No scuffs, marks or damage
- Alloy wheels recently refurbished with decent rubber
- No headlight deterioration
This is a great-looking SLK and the bodywork is free of any noticeable damage or deterioration, with excellent paint, no lacquer damage and crystal-clear headlamps – unusual for one of these as the lenses often become cloudy.
It’s very smart throughout and the car’s party piece – its Vario-Roof - works exactly as it should. The alloy wheels have been refurbished recently and to a very high standard.
The Mechanics
- Drives spot-on
- Lots of work recently completed
- Full service history
- No known issues
The 3.5-litre V6 has recently had replacement idler pulleys, serpentine belt, an aircon re-gas, two new tyres, a Mobil 1 oil change and new oil and air filters, all within the past 2,000 miles. The automatic transmission fluid and filter were replaced approximately 8,000 miles ago.
The vendor reports that the car is terrific to drive and feels tight and well-sorted with no known problems, and that he has used it regularly without issue.
Summary
If you’re looking for a second-generation SLK that’s as good as they’re going to get, then here’s an early example in absolutely marvellous condition having benefited from diligent maintenance throughout its life.
It’s presented in superb order and has an impressive history file, as well as lots of desirable extras, the best engine and is also arguably the best colour. It’s a fabulous car.
