THE APPEAL
Discretion and performance aren’t always the perfect bedfellows, but Mercedes-Benz’s AMG line-up has always been an exemplar for how to combine the two.
And the CLK55 AMG is a perfect example of that. Based on the coupé or cabriolet versions of the E-Class, hastily renamed from ELK after the Mercedes-Benz A-Class’s ill-fated “moose test” rollover, the CLK was a lovely car, especially in higher spec trims. And they don’t come any higher up than the AMG models, which in later life were powered by a gutsy normally aspirated 362bhp 5.4-litre V8 engine.
This one is one of the last CLK55 AMGs of its generation, a desirable soft-top, and is in gorgeous condition with an impeccable history. It’s at the age now where if you look after it, the value is only going to go one way.

SUMMARY
The CLK 55 AMG must be one of the most discreet Mercedes-Benz performance cars ever made, and in many ways that’s core to its appeal. It’s a genuine performance car that can despatch 0-60mph in 5.0 seconds and has a limited 155mph top speed, but it does so in a manner so subtle that only those who know will ever truly know.
If you’re one of the cognoscenti, then you’ll also be aware that the later models are the best and that a cabriolet model in this colour scheme is an even more desirable thing… A rare and lovely modern classic.
