The Appeal

A fine Jaguar is an integral part of British tradition. Just the mention of the marque evokes visions of historic automotive art forms such as the E-Type and XK-120 – cars that live on in the memory like a healthy real ale or short-crust pie.

In VO05 PPY, we have a rare but healthy 2005 example of one of Jaguar’s finest continent crushers as the model neared the end of its production life, prior to its replacement by the new XK version a year later.

In addition, membership to the Jaguar Drivers’ Club, founded in 1958, is open to everyone with historic, current and future interest in this prestige marque and its members are as knowledgeable, helpful and enthusiastic as they come.

The writer confesses to having a ‘soft spot’ for the Jaguar XK8 and if he could place a cheeky bid on this honest example, he surely would. But alas, he cannot, which makes for quite a sad day, if truth be told.

The History

Production of this striking Jaguar XK8 was completed at Jaguar’s expansive Castle Bromwich facility at Castle Vale near Birmingham on Thursday, 17th March, 2005 and was dispatched to H.A. Fox in Worcester where it received its first UK registration on Tuesday, 29th March, starting its working life as a sales demonstration model. Three months later, it was acquired by Mr Todd, its first private keeper.

Today, some 17 years later, its highly presentable condition suggests that each of this Jaguar’s four former keepers loved it more than the previous. The current owner acquired the car in May 2021 but has regrettably not found the anticipated time to make full use of the car, evidenced by the less than 400 miles added to the mileage under his charge. The car is reluctantly offered for sale to a new keeper who hopefully will enjoy and appreciate its raison d'être.

The car has a valid MoT to 29th April, 2022. Of the car’s twenty previous MoT tests, all but five were recorded passes with the fails mostly for consumables such as light bulbs, tyres, etc. For the past several years, the car has been dry-stored when not in use and driven in dry conditions whenever taken out.

The Paperwork

Accompanying the sale of this Jaguar XK8 will be two sets of keys, the V5C registered in the current keeper’s name, the original leather-bound Jaguar-embossed holdall containing the Owner’s Manuals, audio system hand book and the service record book, as pictured.

The Interior

As may be anticipated of this premium British marque, the interior of this Jaguar presents in very good condition and is commensurate with its age and mileage. The interior offers up swathes of superior cashmere leather (code SDZ) covering the seating, pillars, door cards and the lower level of the dashboard.

A blend of leather and pristine veneered burl walnut covers the full width of the well-laid-out dashboard and elegant centre console. There is a Jaguar CD shuttle residing in the boot. All the switchgear and interior electricals including seat adjustments and windows are said by the vendor to be in fine working order.

The Exterior

The condition of the exterior of this Jaguar XK8 matches that of the interior and is indicative of the love and care afforded the car during the past seventeen years. The Radiance Red paintwork gleams around the entire car and compliments the Jaguar’s sleek lines.

The little brightwork that exists around the car is in excellent condition, none of which has a scratch or mark to its surface. A cursory glance down each flank shows no evidence of damage, all apertures open and close as true as the day it was built and even the front valance and number plate, for all their vulnerability, remain blemish free.

It must be noted that there are a couple of stone chips to the bonnet, a vertical scratch on the rear bumper and both headlamp lenses show signs of moisture ingress. The images of these issues are at the end of the accompanying photo gallery. To be fair, they are minor and any professional body shop and detailer worth their salt would make short shrift of them.

The Mechanics

At the photo location, the Jaguar was frequently repositioned by this writer and photographer to obtain the best of the challenging light at this time of year. As expected, the car started first and every time and settled into an appreciative V8 burble, albeit somewhat refined and understated compared to other, more brash V8-powered motors we snappers usually encounter.

The six-speed ZF-sourced automatic gearbox connected smoothly and ‘Drive’ engaged with no drama, requiring a just the gentlest of revs to get underway.

The custodian reports the car to be in excellent mechanical condition with steering, brakes, engine, drivetrain and running gear performing as well as their respective and highly-skilled engineers intended nearly twenty years ago.

Like the immediately visible parts of this handsome Jaguar, the underside and lower sills of the car present in good order with a degree of natural oxidation that may reasonably be expected on a car of this age and mileage.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
