The Appeal
The 996 GT3 took the world by storm upon launch in 1999. But it was the second generation car launched at the March 2003 Geneva Motor Show that left an indelible impression. The majority of upgrades were subtle, marginal improvements over the original design like enhanced aero, fine-tuned suspension, better brakes and special wheels. But the big change was the engine; the so-called Mezger flat-six, derived from the Le Mans winning 911 GT1. The new powerplant was higher revving, lighter and more powerful than its predecessor, making for a seriously impressive "driver's car".
Writing for Evo in September 2024, Jethro Bovingdon muses:
"The GT3 has never just been about outright power and grip. The joy of this stripped-back 911 is that it mixes purity of purpose with subtlety of feel, chases lap times but never at the expense of driver involvement, and that it rewards at walking pace even though it’s developed to be driven flat-out for hours on end without so much as a flicker of its oil temperature gauge."
And that's exactly the point. A 996 GT3 is all about the joy of driving, something Porsche and its competitors should perhaps think about more often. This 2004 example is in fantastic condition for its age, no doubt aided by its mere 31,535 miles!
The vendor tells us:
"I purchased from an acquaintance who owned the car since 2011. The previous owner and myself were both part of a group where we would go on various European road trips."
Original, well-cared-for 996.2 GT3s are getting hard to come by, so don't miss this fabulous example
