HIGHLIGHTS
- Stunning example in immaculate order
- Incredibly low mileage
- Very well maintained
- Original, unrestored and superb
THE APPEAL
With its first SLK, Mercedes-Benz set a new trend for power-operated retractable hardtops, which offered greater stiffness and refinement than traditional soft-top roadsters and were altogether more mature.
The first generation of SLK, the R170, was hugely popular from the outset but later developed a reputation for indifferent build quality. The R171 that followed was measurably better – and that’s what we have here. But it’s not just any old SLK. This is the range-topping SLK 55 AMG; the supercharged V8 range-topper with 415bhp. In such a small car, that means 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.
This one’s an incredible example, having covered less than 26,000 miles from new.
THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK
- Genuine low mileage
- Mercedes-Benz service history up to last year
- Recent invoice for major service
- All original books and manuals
- Replacement service book, verified by Mercedes-Benz dealer service records
- Cherished registration number
- Two keys
THE INTERIOR
- AirScarf system
- AMG Alcantara/leather sports seats
- Incredible specification
- Mercedes-Benz COMAND control system
- Beautiful condition with no obvious issues
The SLK has an incredibly high specification including half leather, half-Alcantara sports memory seats, a leather AMG steering wheel, heated seats, Mercedes COMAND Satnav and DVD player, cruise control, parking sensors front and rear, auto Xenon headlamps, auto-dimming mirrors and air con.
One of the most desirable options on the SLK is its AirScarf system, which blows warm air around the driver’s neck to keep them warm during open-top cruising. It’s found on this car, along with an upgraded Harman/Kardon audio system.
THE EXTERIOR
- Brilliant Silver
- No scuffs, marks or damage
- AMG body kit
- Refurbished alloy wheels
This is a great-looking SLK and the bodywork is free of any noticeable damage or deterioration, with excellent paint and no lacquer damage. It sits on 20-spoke 18-inch AMG alloy wheels which have recently been fully refurbished, are immaculate and are shod with new Continental tyres all-round.
It’s in immaculate condition throughout and the car’s party piece – its Vario-Roof - works exactly as it should – a push of a button and it folds away neatly into the rear deck.
THE MECHANICS
- Drives well
- Incredible performance
- Seven-speed G-TRONIC auto
- Recent major ‘Service B’ service.
Mechanically, the vendor reports that the SLK drives brilliantly and with no known issues. The performance he describes as “incredible”.
It has just had a comprehensive Mercedes-Benz spec ‘Service B’ with new plugs and fluids throughout and has been well-maintained all its life. The push button start (on top of the gear selector) works just fine and the seven-speed G-Tronic transmission operates perfectly in all gears.
SUMMARY
This is a terrific example of the R171 SLK, which is by far the best of the breed. It’s in fantastic condition inside and out, with an incredible low mileage and impeccable history. There are several SLK 55AMGs on the market, but few with provenance, mileage or investor value like this one. It’s one of the best there is.
