The Appeal
The fourth-generation (W211) Mercedes-Benz E-Class debuted at the 2002 Paris Motor Show and was both a huge step forward but also true to the model’s roots – a large, sturdy executive saloon with exceptional ride quality and a hewn-from-granite build, but with a much more dynamic chassis and vastly improved build quality over the W210 model it replaced.
Whether as a cossetting saloon or an ultra-useful estate, the W211 was one of the best cars of its era and today the nicest survivors are very much sought-after. This is one of them – a really cherished and well-preserved example in desirable Avantgarde specification, which was the most luxurious of the W211s fitted with sports suspension. It’s also the rare but sought-after 222bhp 3.2-litre E320 petrol model, actively pursued today because it’s exempt from the London ULEZ and other Clean Air Zone charges, unlike the more common diesel models.
The car is presented in lovely order and is finished in Brilliant Silver, which remains one of the most popular colours for the car. It was first registered in January 2004 by Mercedes-Benz Whitefield in Lancashire and comes with a pretty impressive service record – 12 stamps from new until 2022, up to less than 3,000 miles ago.
The car was with its previous owner for eight years and was passed on to the vendor recently to sell, as she was emigrating to South Africa to live with her son and grandchildren.
Good W211s are getting fewer and further between, making this well-loved example a rare beast, especially given the engine choice, smart colour and great specification. It’s a car that’s not only a worthwhile future investment, but also one that you can use and enjoy every day.
You’ll have to look long and hard to find a smarter one.
