The Appeal
The Land Rover Discovery is effectively the British company's last word in SUVs. Originally intended as a standard 4x4, cheaper than the standard Range Rover, these taller, wider and roomier off-roaders steadily moved upmarket until they hit a zenith - and stayed there - in the 2000s.
The 2004 Land Rover Discovery II is the only year of the model with a manufacturer's central diff lock that can be engaged from the centre console. Previously, Discovery IIs carried the hardware that wasn't connected up - it was only the 2004 model year that reconnected them, right before their replacement with the 2nd generation. Purchased two years ago, the car has been well maintained, with the underbody sealed for protection and less than 10,000 miles added since.
The vehicle has been upgraded with Teraflex springs and dampeners, and a new front steering bar, improving its off-road capabilities and offering a smoother ride even than when it left the factory.
