2004 Jaguar S-Type R

Highlights

  • Nicely specified facelift R with low mileage
  • Full service history and just serviced by main dealer
  • Significant recent mechanical investment
  • Well present with excellent bodywork and interior
  • One of Jaguar’s best super saloons with 400bhp on tap
  • Long MOT to March 2024

The Appeal

When Jaguar decided to build an executive saloon to sit below its flagship XJ it looked to the past for ideas. That was completely understandable because in the 1960s Jaguar offered the world a run of saloons that are arguably the most beautiful ever produced.
When the supercharged R was added to the S-Type line up and some subtle alterations made to the styling the car showed its true colours: a distinctive, addictively capable super saloon in the spirit of those ‘60s four door sports cars.
Just 1,274 S-Type Rs were sold in the UK. This very low mileage example has been carefully maintained and presents much as it surely would have done when it left the showroom in 2004. A facelift model it has just been serviced and comes with the reassurance of a long MOT.
Lauded by car reviewers in period, this would make a great daily driver or weekend show car.

  • Some minor stone chips to note to the front of the car but not significant and reflecting the low mileage
  • Front lower bumper has a small crack on the nearside

  • Fitted with four Continental new tyres within the last 1,000 miles we are told
  • Five spoke R model 18in alloys recently refurbished with new centre caps and unmarked

  • Some surface rust visible on underside of the car but no structural advisories on the last MOT

The Mechanics

  • 4.2litre AJ-8 Jaguar V8 engine with supercharger developing 400bhp
  • 0-60mph in 5secs
  • 6spd ZF 6HP26 automatic gearbox with Jaguar J-gate allowing clutchless sequential shifting
  • Advisory for two rear suspension arms on the last MOT
  • Servicing and suspension work undertaken by Listers Jaguar between December 2022 and January 2023 at a cost of £5,000
  • Has covered less than 1,000 miles since last service

Summary

The S-Type R is a uniquely Jaguar super saloon, one that is as comfortable as it is capable. There is little to differentiate it from the rest of the range, save for a boot lip spoiler and mesh grille. Which feels like a very Jaguar way to surprise the competition.
The R is a rare car, particularly with the low mileage of this example. Nicely specified with full service history that includes significant recent investment, this is a great opportunity to acquire one of Jaguar’s most capable and understated cars.
