2004 Honda VTR1000 SP2

Highlights

  • Much-improved SP2 version of the revered VTR1000
  • Collector-quality SP2 in superb condition
  • Under 4,000 miles from new
  • Just three registered keepers
  • Recently recommissioned ready for MOT and road use
  • Factory standard but with some choice enhancements

The Appeal

The VTR1000 had a tall mountain to climb: it had to beat Ducati’s 916 on the track and in showrooms. Remarkably, it did exactly that. In the hands of Colin Edwards it snatched two World Superbike Championships from under the noses of its Italian rivals.
Honda homologated the bike for road use with few changes. Buyers rated the original SP1 as a civilised, smooth-riding and beautifully engineered alternative to the more flamboyant Ducati. The SP2 from 2002 was even better, notably introducing a revised fuel injection system that nudged power even higher to 136bhp. MCN describes the VTR1000 as ‘a very special bike.’
These bikes, particularly the SP2, are very collectable. If you want one, you’ll likely want this one. It ticks all the wish list boxes: exceptionally low mileage of under 4,000 from new, well maintained, just three registered keepers in its 21 years and in exceptional condition. There are even some choice titivations like an Akrapovic exhaust to dial up the appeal.
This SP2 has spent recent years as part of a private collection. The vendor has just checked it over and recommissioned it so that it is ready for its first MOT since 2008 and then road use. Whether you choose to add this to your static collection or get out and ride it, it looks hugely tempting.
