The Appeal
The Mk4 Vauxhall Astra was one of the UK’s most popular cars for a reason – but whilst it was a perfectly decent car in almost every respect, it wasn’t exactly sexy.
So, in order to inject a bit of pizzazz into the Astra line-up, Vauxhall turned to Italian styling house Bertone for help. In 2001, two new Italian-designed Astras came along – a striking coupé and an equally attractive convertible, each aimed at adding a bit of desirability to the Vauxhall mix.
It was a successful formula – the previously staid Astra evolved into a bit of a looker, and today the Bertone models have an increasingly popular following, as usable, inexpensive modern classics.
This one is a great example if you want a fun car that’s both cheap to own and run, but also looks the part. A 1.6-litre entry-level model, it still comes with an electric power-folding roof as well as some Irmscher styling accessories. It’s the perfect modern classic for a young enthusiast, or as a family-friendly drop top for the upcoming summer.
