The Appeal
Designed as a smaller, sportier counterpart to the R129 SL, the R170 SLK's stand-out feature was the electro-hydraulically operated folding hard top - a technology few manufacturers have been able to master before or since. This brilliant 'vario-roof' design meant the SLK could effortlessly transform from roadster to coupé in just 25 seconds at the mere touch of a button. Clever stuff. It's no wonder that it sold well.
This 2003 example is one of the last of the first-generation SLKs. As the 230 model, it features a 2.3-litre supercharged inline-four, harking back to the 'Kompressor' forced induction technology used by the firm during the 1930s.
Presented in immaculate original condition and showing just 38,097 miles on the clock, this SLK is among the nicest examples we've seen. Dry-stored and judiciously serviced, it's a compelling modern classic, and a ULEZ-compliant one at that. What a great choice for cruising around central London in the utmost comfort, style and sophistication.
