HISTORY
The Mercedes SL has long stood for refined elegance and continent crushing ability but it was only with the introduction of the 2002 model that the Sport part of the SL's 'Sport Leicht' designation could justify its existence.
Mercedes have made the effort to endow the car with some genuine dynamic prowess and produced a car with supercar performance but with accoutrements that would do most luxury saloons proud.
The famed Mercedes roof mechanism and design also gives the benefit of both coupe and open top motoring.
BACKGROUND
This is a 4 owner car which has had some very expensive and AMG upgrades which certainly helps it stand out from the crowd. A 2007 AMG face lift kit has been fitted which includes the 2007 AMG front bumper, spoiler and side skirts, AMG front grille, and a rear AMG bumper with diffuser and rear spoiler.
Other upgrades include a CKS sports exhaust (which sounds great) LED rear lights, 18” AMG alloy wheels fitted with Pirelli Zero’s, and yellow brake callipers with Pagid discs and pads.
The standard car’s 306 BHP has also been increased by re-mapping the engine to provide even more power and an extra helping of, the already considerable, torque available, making this a particularly quick SL 500.
PAPERWORK
The car comes with a good Mercedes Main Dealer service history with over 12 entries in the service book, 9 of which are Mercedes stamps, the others from specialists.
In addition, there are many receipts and invoices for various servicing works done over the years.
INTERIOR
As a testament to Mercedes quality the blue leather interior is in very nice overall condition and hides its age and mileage well.
All the controls and switchgear have that quality Teutonic feel to them and being a Mercedes, the cabin is very well equipped and functional with electric roof, windows and heated seats and all usual Mercedes SL refinements, including a panoramic roof which was a very expensive original option.
There is some wear on the leather steering wheel completely commensurate with the mileage but the driver’s seat shows little or no signs of wear and tear.
Also fitted is an upgraded Alpine widescreen audio system with touch-screen Sat-Nav.
EXTERIOR
The Brilliant Silver paintwork is in great condition and, other than a few touched in stone-chips here and there, the overall look of the car does not disappoint. Annoyingly there are two small dents on the driver’s front wing probably caused by the inevitable trolley in the supermarket car park but a local dent removal person could easily address these.
MECHANICS
The engine bay and service history speak volumes to the care this car has obviously had over the years with its various owners, and it will come freshly serviced and ready to enjoy with a year’s MOT.
APPEAL
The Mercedes 500 SL is certainly a lot of car. It has great looks and that wonderful roof that turns a luxury coupe into a luxury convertible at the touch of a button. Immense performance, which in this instance has been tweaked to provide even more driver excitement and a whole host of extras and driver aids make this a very special car which will never fail to impress and excite.
The AMG face-lift and 500 SL number plate are some nice final touches that make this a hard car to say no to.
