THE APPEAL
The alloy-bodied ‘X350’ generation of XJ6 marked a sea-change for Jaguar when it debuted at the 2002 Paris Motor Show. Strikingly handsome, huge and imposing, it was nevertheless lighter and more frugal than the smaller S-TYPE.
It’s a car that’s rapidly gathering interest in classic circles as it approaches its 20th birthday, with the best examples now finding their way into the hands of collectors. And if you want the absolute best, then the XJR is the one to go for – its 400bhp supercharged V8 offering supercar-baiting performance in the body of a luxury saloon car. It’s the ultimate Q-Car and a fabulous thing, available for a fraction of the £65,000 it would have cost new.
THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK
- Imported from Japan in 2020
- Converted to MPH speedo
- Two major services since
- Garage stored
- UK V5C and all import papers sorted
- MOT May 2023
- Last serviced and MOT’d on 9th May this year and all advisories were addressed
The XJR was exported to Japan soon after it was manufactured and was reimported in the summer of 2020 by a reputable specialist, who really values the Japanese import models due to the fact they have never been used on salted roads nor have they seen the general high mileage hard wear and tear so often seen on UK cars.
Since it returned to the UK it has been serviced twice by an independent specialist and has had the MAF sensor, gearbox module, torque converter and a gearbox service under warranty, while it was also converted to UK-spec speedometer (mph) and registration plate plinths.
THE INTERIOR
- Warm Charcoal and Caramel trim
- Amazing specification
- Adaptive cruise and reverse parking cameras
- Superb condition
Like all XJRs this one is wonderfully well-equipped – it has electrically adjustable heated seats, climate control, automatic transmission, self-dimming mirrors, auto lights and wipers, touch-screen infotainment and a reversing camera. It also features adaptive cruise control – a technology still seen as modern today but pioneered by Jaguar 20 years ago on the X350.
It’s all there and the cabin is supremely comfortable and very smart in its Warm Charcoal over Caramel colour scheme. There are barely any sign of wear and everything works as it should.
THE EXTERIOR
- Excellent condition with no damage
- British Racing Green Pearlescent
- Waxoyl treated on arrival in the UK
- Mopped and ceramic coated
The Jaguar still looks fabulous in its original Pearlescent British Racing Green paint, which wears its 19 years fabulously well and still retains a deep and lustrous shine. There are no dents or obvious damage, nor is there any alloy reaction in the paint, which is one of the first things you look for on these cars. It was treated to a full mop and ceramic coating in late 2020 and still has a deep, glossy shine.
All of the trim is present and correct the tyres are in good condition, there’s no reported kerbing to any of the alloy wheels and the bumpers and trim are described as free from notable scuffs or damage.
THE MECHANICS
- 4.2-litre V8 with supercharger
- 400bhp
- Six-speed auto transmission
- Well-maintained
Under the bonnet you’ll find Jaguar’s 4.2 V8, as also found in S-TYPE and XK8, but in this case equipped with a Garrett supercharger giving it 400bhp performance. In the big XJ it delivers 0-60mph in under six seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.
This one has been impeccably maintained by its current owner and has recently had a gearbox service, new front arms to cure squeaky suspension and a full engine service by a renowned Jaguar specialist who described it as one of the best he’d seen. The vendor describes the performance as ‘spirited’ with an addictive whine from the supercharger.
SUMMARY
Jaguar ‘X350’ XJs are rapidly attracting more interest as they age and the XJR is the absolute pick of the bunch – arguably Jaguar’s last true big V8 muscle car, as the character of the later XJ was completely different.
This one is hugely desirable – low mileage, low ownership, well-maintained and in the all-time classic colour of British Racing Green, it’s as good as an XJR of this vintage gets.
