2003 Hult Healey

Vendor supplied images

Highlights

  • Interesting Austin Healey evocation with Volvo mechanicals
  • Lightweight glass fibre bodywork helping keep the overall mass down to around 890 kilograms
  • 2.3-litre Volvo inline-four apparently producing approximately 200 horsepower

The Appeal

You’d be forgiven for never having heard of the Hult Healey, but by the time you’ve read this, you’ll certainly want one…
Back in the 1970s, a gentleman by the name of Mats Svanberg from the small locality of Hult, Sweden was finally able to acquire his dream car - an Austin Healey. After driving his new acquisition, Svanberg reckoned he could build something that looked just as good, but crucially, would be a far superior car dynamically. Utilising capable and readily available Volvo mechanicals, lightweight glass fibre bodywork and Swedish rallying know-how, the Hult Healey was born.
We’re excited to present this smart 2003 example, with 2.3-litre Volvo inline-four apparently producing approximately 200 horsepower. Reportedly weighing in at a little under 900 kilograms, this Austin Healey evocation is sure to be far more sprightly than the original. This particular car has evidently been completed to a high standard, so don’t hesitate in making this Swedish curiosity yours.

  • Six owners in total
  • We’re informed that the car is always stored inside when not in use

  • Period appropriate look and feel
  • Equipped with harnesses
  • A basic, motorsport-inspired dashboard contains all the basic instrumentation and switchgear including a battery cut-off
  • All electrics apparently working correctly
  • All the carpeting and door trims look to be in good order with minimal wear
  • The vendor comments that the seats are really comfortable
  • Having covered very few kilometres, all the upholstery looks to be in excellent order
  • Sporty steering wheel and gear lever which fit the aesthetic perfectly
  • Equipped with a roll frame

The Exterior

  • Attractive red paintwork
  • Racing-inspired white roundels and de-bumpered look

  • The red paint is very presentable and the vendor comments that there are only a few small blemishes upon close inspection
  • Period Marchal spot lamps complete with covers
  • All the chrome trims present well
  • Austin Healey 3000 badging
  • Smart glass fibre bodywork with no obvious signs of damage
  • Built upon a steel chassis, similar to that of a genuine Austin Healey
  • The underside appears really clean and well presented with no signs of corrosion apparent
  • Complete with a canvas roof which looks in fantastic condition

The Mechanics

  • Volvo 2.3-litre inline four
  • The vendor informs us that the engine produces around 200 horsepower and, with some tuning, these cars have been known to make in excess of 250 horsepower
  • M46 gearbox with overdrive - reportedly set up by rally experts
  • Volvo 1031 rear axle
  • Volvo-derived suspension componentry
  • Disc brakes fitted front and rear
  • We’re informed that the current engine has only been fitted for around the last 2,000 kilometres
  • The vendor reports that the car drives incredibly well, with ample performance and excellent handling

Summary

This is a very impressive machine, the likes of which are seldom seen. The use of dependable and capable Volvo underpinnings are the work of a true genius and the resulting performance and reliability speaks for itself.
Built to a very good standard and presented in great condition, this is certainly an evocation to consider adding to your collection.
