The Appeal
Perhaps only Honda could have responded to the arrival of the MX-5 with the S2000. It was light, nimble and retro-styled like its fellow countryman. But that’s where the similarities ended, because Honda went its own way with the engine. The S2000 had a VTEC-equipped screamer of a 2litre that revved all the way to 9,000rpm.
That single element imbues the S2000 with a character wholly its own. It is augmented by near perfect weight balance from the rear drive layout. This is a car that demands to be driven and when it is, it rewards: quick, nimble and responsive in ways few 90s convertibles can match.
These cars naturally have a cultish following. They rarely come to market because owners hang onto them. Here’s your opportunity to join the tribe: a very well kept, Monte Carlo Blue AP1 in great condition.
It was serviced by Honda main dealers to 2018 and then by independent specialists. Recent work includes a timing belt and tensioner change in September 2023 - less than 1,000 miles ago.
As a first generation ‘AP1’ S2000 this one fits into the cheaper car tax band. The MOT runs to October 2024 and it was recently professionally undersealed.
