2002 Vauxhall VX220

Highlights

  • Just three owners from new
  • Comprehensive history file
  • Unmodified and in factory specification
  • 2.2-litre, naturally aspirated
  • Five-speed manual transmission

The Appeal

Built at Hethel alongside the Elise S2, and sharing much of the Elise’s DNA, the VX220 was Vauxhall’s attempt to create an out-and-out sports car for the noughties. And it was brilliant. Featuring all the handling prowess and agility of the Elise, but with a more powerful engine, longer wheelbase for better stability at speed, and some extra safety features such as an airbag and ABS, it was and remains a superb little sports car.
In the possession of one owner for 20 years, this smart example is presented in very fine condition for its age, unmodified and with a comprehensive history file. We love the sporty red paintwork and those handsome factory 17-inch alloys. Under-appreciated for many years, the VX220 is rapidly being recognised for the performance bargain it really is. So why not snap up this fab little roadster – it’s the perfect machine for taking to events and attacking B-roads this summer.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in September 2002
  • Three owners from new
  • First owner was the main dealer, who apparently had it for just 350 miles
  • The second owner had the car until March of this year
  • The vendor took the car in part exchange and planned to keep it, but at 6’6” tall, they find getting in and out and actually driving the car too uncomfortable
  • We’re told it has been meticulously maintained and comes with a comprehensive service record
  • Apparently the car has always been garaged, and the condition attests to this
  • Extensive history file includes the original purchase invoice, many servicing and maintenance invoices, previous MOTs, a brochure and the owner’s handbooks
  • 118,104 miles on the clock, verified by the MOT history
  • The car does not currently have an MOT but it will come with a fresh MOT

The Interior

  • Black leather sports seats are figure-hugging and presented in good order, with some creasing and wear commensurate with the car’s age
  • Floor mats are fitted and the passenger side features a foot brace
  • Stylish details, including a billet gear knob and window winders
  • Uprated Pioneer CD/DAB radio system, with Bluetooth, USB and Aux connectivity
  • Driver’s airbag
  • The instruments and controls all show well, with a little wear from use, but no damage we could see
  • We noted some wear to the silver paint finish around the HVAC controls and door handles
  • The vendor tells us that everything works just as it should, with no faults

The Exterior

  • Aluminium tub chassis, shared with the Elise S2
  • Longer wheelbase for improved stability at speed and when cruising
  • Glass-fibre reinforced plastic bodyshell, which presents in good condition, with no notable damage we could see
  • Smart red paintwork suits the car’s lines and appears to be in nice condition, with some minor blemishes and stone chips, as you’d expect
  • The removable black fabric roof panel looks to be in fine fettle, taut and neat with no sagging, damage or fading we could discern
  • Underneath, everything looks very clean and straight, with no major scrapes or dings to the floors or sills
  • The car is riding on the original, factory fitted 17-inch, five-spoke alloy wheels, which have no evidence of kerbing or lacquer peel that we could identify and wear a set of matched tyres

The Mechanics

  • 2,198cc naturally aspirated, four-cylinder Ecotec engine
  • From the factory this mid-mounted powerplant delivers 145bhp to the rear wheels
  • Low 870Kg kerbweight results in a 0-62mph dash of just 5.6 seconds
  • Five-speed manual transmission
  • Lotus tuned suspension
  • Anti-lock braking system
  • We’re assured the car is exceptional to drive, with no faults or issues reported

Summary

Very much the thinking man’s sports car, the VX220 offers incredible performance and handling for the money. More powerful, more comfortable and just as great to drive as a contemporary Elise, we think this lovely little roadster is a great proposition.
