The Appeal

If you’re a fan of old-school air-cooled 911s and have yet to dip your toe into the “modern” water-cooled Porsche era, we’d wager you’ll enjoy what the Boxster has to offer. Inspired by the 356 Cabriolet, the 986 Boxster came along in 1996 and acted as the 911s smaller, simpler, sibling. This was still a “proper Porsche” with a rear-mounted flat-six and the convertible roof has ensured the Boxster remains a mainstay of the Porsche catalogue.

First-generation (986) Boxsters are now a modern classic in their own right, and here we have a lovely example from 2002. This Tiptronic Boxster S has a mere 65,221 miles on the clock and comes with a long advisory-free MOT. The Porsche looks to be in very good condition for its age, inside and out and the vendor informs us that it’s been regularly maintained and carefully stored throughout current ownership. The car has had just three former registered keepers, the last of which was an engineer who serviced it themselves with OEM materials.

The vendor acquired the Boxster earlier this year, intending it to be their summer sports car. But having driven the Porsche less than they would have liked, now it’s time for a new enthusiast to continue its preservation and enjoy this increasingly sought-after roadster.

The Condition

Superb bodywork for the car’s age; no accident damage apparent
The paintwork does not appear notably scratched, the lacquer seems in good order and we don’t see many stone chips
The underside looks very clean and the vendor comments that these early Boxsters do not often suffer from corrosion issues
The folding roof has weathered well considering its age; the PVC window a little cloudy
We’re informed that the roof is completely watertight
Attractive BBS wheels fitted and in smart order - these complement the paint and contrast nicely with the red brake callipers
Michelin Pilot Sport tyres fitted
As you would expect, there’s slight wear to the driver's seat bolster but otherwise, the upholstery is not notably worn
The car comes with genuine Porsche floor mats (not pictured)
The convertible hood’s headlining is reportedly in great shape with no water marks or signs of leaks
Fitted with a BOSE sound system and heated seats which are apparently very effective

The Mechanics

The vendor states that the Boxster “starts up and works perfectly, idles as it should and drives as it should with no engine rattles or signs of IMS issues”
We’re informed that the gearbox is smooth changing up and down the box
Original exhaust system retained, so the car is quiet and refined when cruising
New OEM brake discs and pads a couple of years ago which have only covered around 4,000 miles
The vendor comments that it is plenty of fun when using it in manual mode, it pulls very well and is really refined
