The Background

In 1991, it’s no secret that Porsche were in need of some help. With a model line up of just 3 cars, albeit nice cars in their own right, they were getting slightly dated and sales figures were not high enough to secure the company's future. This, with an offer from Toyota to buy the company, meant things had to change and so Porsche took some advice from them, and it was decided a newer cheaper sports car was needed.

This was achieved by using parts from the new top of the range 993, such as the bonnet and lights, together with some other parts, plus the newly designed engine which was heading for the 996 that wasn't due to be released for another few years. The result would become the Porsche Boxster, an affordable mid-engined two-seater roadster.
The 356 Cabriolet, Speedster and 550 Spyder, were all inspirational to Grant Larson in the design of the Porsche Boxster. The first generation Boxster 986 made its debut in late 1996 with its mid-engined 2.5 litre flat-six cylinder engine, producing 204 bhp with 180 lb-ft torque. The Boxster was an instant success with the public and motoring world, a quick, nimble and affordable sports car, and still a Porsche.
In 1999, Porsche increased the engine to a 2.7 litre, pushing the power to 220 bhp and also introduced the Boxster S variant, which came with a 3.2 litre flat-six producing 256 bhp, which is this particular model we have here.

The History

The seller of this 2002 Porsche Boxster S has owned the car since 4th June 2021. The car came about as a bit of fun for the seller. He originally had a VW T5 which he had been using for traveling around the country and over to Europe. He decided to part with it and so it went up for sale, bringing on a number of calls for the popular T5, one of which was from the then owner of this Boxster S.

He came to look at the T5 and threw in the curve ball about taking the Boxster in as part of the deal. With the sun shining and the car sitting there, the seller thought a convertible sports car could be a bit of fun for the summer, and afterall it is a Porsche. A deal was struck and, as they say, the rest is history.
Enjoyed for just a few months with the roof down and having masses of fun, something bigger than a two-seater sports car is required, and so the Porsche has to go.

The Paperwork

The V5 is present and shows 9 previous keepers for the Boxster, and it comes with 2 keys.
The history for the Porsche is in quite good order, with plenty of previous MOT certificates and some service invoices. The service book has 7 service stamps, in keeping with the mileage, and there are 4 brake fluid change stamps. The owners handbooks are present for the car and also the handbook for the upgraded Pioneer head unit.
There is an MOT on the car which was carried out on 27th May 2021, at 54,389 miles.

The Interior

Inside, the Boxster is in a nice condition. Finished in Metropol Blue leather, the seats do have some age related creasing as you would expect. There is some slight wear on the driver’s bolster, which is pretty standard for a low seated car, but can be easily recoloured with the products available today.
Sitting in the driver's seat, the door cards are in good condition. The steering wheel doesn't show any signs of excessive wear, there are some slight scratches to the Porsche crest. The instruments are all working as they should with no warning lights displayed when the engine is running. The odometer has a reading of 55,673 miles.

The dashboard is finished in the same colour as the seats and is in good condition. The original head unit has been upgraded with a Pioneer unit featuring a large display screen. The switches throughout are in good order with the pictures showing and not worn off. The gear knob has some minimal wear to the silver finish, usually caused by peoples rings rubbing against it.
The carpets are in good condition and protected with some Porsche logo carpet mats. Under the bonnet is nice and clean with the unused spare wheel in place, complete with the cover. The boot area is the same with no noticeable wear to the carpet.

The Exterior

Finished in White, this 2002 Boxster started life in Silver. At some point in its life a former keeper decided to carry out a full colour change to the car. A thorough job has been done, as everywhere has been repainted including the undersides of the bonnet and boot.
From the front, the car has just a few age-related stone chips. The headlights have been swapped for the later model clear units. Losing the orange indicators gives a much cleaner look. The bonnet aligns nice and straight with the bumper, lights and wings. The windscreen is free from any noticeable scratches or chips.
Onto the sides of the sporty little roadster, the side repeaters again like the headlights have lost the orange and have been replaced with smoked items. Looking down the sides, it’s nice and straight with no obvious car park dinks that we could see. On the door handles to both sides the paint has come off a little on the seal between the handle and the door skin. The door shuts align well to both sides. The roof operates as quickly as it should going both up and down. Plastic windows in soft tops are notorious for going cloudy or scratched, this one has done well and is still nice and clear. The roof itself is in good condition with just the usual crease marks on the corners, caused when it folds up.
For the rear, like the front the lights have been swapped for some later smoked ones, these have no cracks to them. The boot lid aligns as it should with the bumper that is free from any scuffs.
The wheels are 2 piece split rims that have been powder coated in black. There is some corrosion to the rims under the powder coating. The tyres are worn but do have some miles left in them.

The Mechanics

With this being the Porsche Boxster S, it is fitted with the larger 3.2 litre flat-six engine, producing 256 bhp and this is coupled to a 6-speed manual gearbox.
The engine fires up perfectly with no hesitation. It sounds fantastic when the loud pedal is given a light touch, there are no unwanted noises to be heard. The seller reports the gear change is smooth and crisp and the car pulls through all the gears as it should.
The handling on the Boxster is agile and fluent with no noises coming from the suspension or transmission. With a near perfectly balanced car, what else would you expect?

The Appeal

Resprayed in white and given the later style lights for a more modern look, this Boxster S has some nice history and looks to have been well maintained.
Perfect for the summer months with the roof down, the sound of the 3.2 flat six behind you as you blast down the twisty B roads in a fun two-seater roadster with a near perfect balance. You will certainly feel at home behind the wheel of the Porsche Boxster S.
