The Background
Only 250 examples were built to celebrate the Defender’s starring role in the ‘Tomb Raider’ film. These limited edition cars were all finished in Bonatti Grey with extensive chequer-plate body cladding. A roof pack and support bar frame was also fitted, along with a row of spotlights, side protection runners, and Pewter Grey ‘boost’ alloy wheels. A unique Tomb Raider plaque was also present on the front wing.
It is powered by the 2.5-litre Td5 diesel engine, producing around 122hp and 221lb-ft of torque, coupled to a five-speed manual transmission and this very nice example features the optional extras of air conditioning and half-leather black seats.
The History
Believed to have spent most of its life in London judging by the full-service history this has obviously been a very well cared for Land Rover.
The current owner has had the car for about a year and has decided to sell due to a lack of use to allow a new owner to embark on his or her own adventure.
The car is booked in for a full service and will come with a full year’s MOT.
The Paperwork
The V5c is present showing 7 previous keepers and the car comes with many receipts for servicing and repairs throughout its years and a well stamped up service book.
Previous MOTs and the original handbooks are all included and there is one full set of keys, and all the original tools are present.
A transferable tracker with movement alert has also been fitted so the new owner can take on the subscription to the service if required.
The Interior
Inside the cabin you’ll find chequer-plate panels in the foot wells and various aluminium components and Moto-Lita steering wheel that help distinguish this special edition from a normal Defender.
The cabin does show signs of wear and tear as you’d expect from a twenty year old car with the driver’s seat being particularly worn and having a large split in the seat base.
The rest of the rugged interior has fared rather better with everything showing the patina of age which some light restoration work would soon sort out.
The speakers in the front have got some staining but still work and one of the rear speakers is not complete.
All the door cards, windows and safari roof are in an acceptable and good condition and the floor appears to be solid throughout, with the four half-leather folding rear seats all being free from any rips or tears.
All the gauges, instruments and switchgear are all reported to function correctly and the sun-roof and headlining all look good.
The Exterior
Finished in Bonatti Grey the bodywork shows no sign of any damage or major dents with only the rather typical Land Rover rust bubbling beginning to appear on most of the body panels where steel meets aluminium and oxidisation occurs, a few inevitable stone chips and some small dings in the odd panel.
The roof rack, the various bolt-on additions and the door hinges are all showing early signs of rusting and as you look around the body there are a few scratches to be found but all the chequer-plate body cladding is in great condition.
The ‘boost’ colour coded alloy wheels are just showing some light corrosion and are all fitted with B F Goodrich All Terrain tyres which have plenty of life left in them.
Other than these slight imperfections the overall impression is good, with the underneath looking particularly solid and clean.
The Mechanics
The current owner reports that there are no known issues with the car other than the central rear brake light, which is currently not working.
Last year the car had a new clutch fitted along with a new rear cross-member and the car will be receiving a full service prior to sale.
A look under the bonnet shows no obvious signs of any coolant or oil leaks and everything appears to be in good shape as one would expect in a car that has been regularly serviced and maintained.
The Appeal
The Land Rover Defender continues to be a very collectable and desirable Land Rover and this limited edition Tomb Raider version certainly stands out from the many examples you’ll find available for sale.
So if you’re a Land Rover or movie fan, or both, this car should certainly appeal to you, being a rare opportunity to acquire a nice original example of the timeless Defender in this ‘special equipment’ guise.
