2002 Ferrari 360 Spider (Ex Frankie Dettori)

Highlights

  • Bought new by Frankie Dettori
  • Exceptionally presented low mileage example
  • Recent service and timing belt change

The Appeal

The Ferrari 360 was something of a revolutionary car for the marque.

Of course those familiar with the prancing horse will know the company is no stranger to beautiful exotic high performance cars, but models prior to the 360 were seen as delicate and in a sense unreliable. The 360 however, came in to change all that.
Lightweight construction, a thumping V8 powertrain and an all new F1 automatic paddle shift gearbox, the 360 has all the good bits that make a Ferrari so special, but within a more robust and genuinely usable package.

It is for this reason that the 360 garners so much appreciation from Ferrari enthusiasts and is seen as one of the all time great modern Ferraris.
This 2002 Spider was first purchased by legendary jockey Frankie Dettori and is accompanied by a wealth of Ferrari service history.

Presenting in impeccable clean condition, this really is a wonderful example of the model.

The Interior

  • Excellent cream leather upholstery
  • Leather bound Ferrari tool kit
  • Factory Ferrari head unit
  • Plush red carpeting
An absolute masterclass in automotive interior design, the cabin of the 360 is, in a word, outstanding.

Sumptuous cream leather adorns much of the interior space, complemented by beautiful metal finish trim pieces. The cockpit of the 360 really is a wonderful place to be and so much of that comes down to the quality of the upholstery and furnishings, all of which becomes even more pleasant when the electric roof retracts.
Two impeccable sculpted sports seats take precedence in the cabin, boasting great quality leather and contrasting red stitching. Embossed with the legendary prancing horse logo, these are of a wonderful standard and look perfect nestled behind the doors of the 360.
Swathes of quality leather are also found on the excellent dash panel, however here we find a two tone black and cream motif.

Distinctly lacking in blemishing and sun damage, the dash is in great shape and holds a smart collection of switchgear and the factory Ferrari head unit, all of which is reported to function correctly, although the head unit does need reprogramming, the code for which however, is present with the vehicle.
Opening the front storage compartment one is presented with the brilliant leather bound Ferrari tool kit which doesn't appear to have seen any usage within its lifespan.
The 360 has worn its incredibly limited miles very well and presents as such, highlighting very limited signs of wear and age.

The Exterior

  • Iconic Rosso Corsa red paint scheme
  • Electric convertible top
  • Five spoke Ferrari alloy wheels
The 360 represented a great leap forward in design for Ferrari, with the curved body lines being far more modern than its more angular wedge shaped predecessors, the 360 brought the marque comfortably into the 21st century.
Arguably the finest, and surely the most iconic colour found on a Ferrari, Rosso Corsa red, was specced on this 360 from the factory, and it looks absolutely excellent.

The paint still has a brilliant factory fresh quality to it 20 years on from its manufacture with very little if anything in the way of patina and blemishing. A clear sign that this has been a well loved and cared for car.
A big selling point of this particular 360 comes in the form of the roof. With this being a rare Spider model, we find a black fabric electrically operated convertible top.

The roof itself is of a wonderful quality, with nothing to be seen in the way or damage or tarnishing to the upholstery. Upon the press of a button within the cabin, the roof retracts in a smooth and quiet manner before being stowed within a designated section in the rear of the car, to provide an excellent open top experience.
With the roof down the factory wind deflector can be installed in between the two head braces behind the seats.
At ground level one is presented with four excellent factory five spoke Ferrari alloy wheels, all of which are in remarkably clean condition and exhibit a rich gloss shine.

The Mechanics

  • Glorious mid mounted V8 engine
  • Recent timing belt change and annual service
  • F1 paddle shift gearbox
Situated in the middle of the car is the excellent 3.6 litre naturally aspirated V8 motor.

Often hailed as one of the finest V8s of all time, this booming 8 cylinder sounds extraordinary and has the performance credentials to back it up.
Having been subject to regular and rigorous maintenance at the hands of both Ferrari dealers and independent Ferrari specialists, the low mileage unit in this particular example is of a great standard and presents in good clean order.

Mated to the V8 is a transmission that was another revolutionary piece for Ferrari, the F1 paddle shift transmission. Still providing clean, crisp gear changes, the F1 box still feels as strong as the day it rolled out of the factory in 2002.
A welcome sight in the extensive service history folder comes in the form of an invoice for a recent annual service undertaken by Ferrari Colchester just a few months, and a few hundred miles ago.

Alongside the filter and fluid changes, the all important timing belts were replaced at a cost of just over 2 thousand pounds.

Summary

Exotic, beautiful and of course fast. The Ferrari 360 is a car that does a marvellous job of doing all the things that make a Ferrari so special, but is a model that boasts genuine usability and much improved reliability over its predecessors.

For those looking for a Ferrari they can use comfortably, look no further.
77 MJF is a beautifully presented example of the model.

With a vast number of services on the roster, including a recent timing belt replacement this is one that wants nothing to be enjoyed.
