The Appeal
The BMW Z3 Roadster is a car that enjoys enduring appeal with both marque-specific and driving enthusiasts alike, thanks to the range of engines on offer, nimble chassis and roof-down motoring experience they offer.
This facelift (LCi) 2.2-litre Z3 Sport is from the final year of production, boasting an M54 inline-six engine, Titan Silver paintwork and a strong factory specification, not to mention only four registered keepers from new and sub-50,000 miles on the odometer!
The History and Paperwork
- V5 Registered keepers document, showing 4 registered owners
- Full complement of BMW manuals and booklets
- Stamped service history, with the most recent stamp being at 28,070 miles in September 2010, though the previous owner was an engineer by trade, and reportedly carried out all servicing and maintenance himself, with notes from 2012 and 2016 in the booklet.
- The car was purchased to go into a large car collection, and has spent an extended period of time stored outside, and as a result is in need of a full valet/detailing to bring it back to its best.
- New Spark Plugs Fitted September 2023
- New Battery Fitted 2023
The Interior
- Split-tone Blue/Black interior in very good overall condition
- Due to its extended period stored outside, there are some areas of damp visible in the cabin which require rectification
- The speaker grilles in the doors have corroded
- The seats themselves look to be in good order with no rips, tears or damage noted, but numerous areas of damp that require a deep clean
- The high-traffic touch-points such as the switches, shifter and steering wheel all exhibit a commensurate usage patina in keeping with the car’s age and milage
- In the rear, the tool kit looks to be complete. The carpets are in good condition but show a large stain towards the centre of the boot.
The Exterior
- Desirable TitanSilver Metallic paintwork
- Bodywork in good condition overall, with no signs of any impact damage or large scuffs
- There are a number of small blemishes as is commensurate for a vehicle of this era, such as a scratch on the OSR arch, another on the NSR lower corner of the bumper, and the usual stone chips and very light imperfections
- The matching blue soft-top was a replacement item fitted by Raymond Pugh limited whilst the car was in the care of the previous owner
- Due to its lengthy time stored outside, the paintwork requires a full detailing/valeting to bring it back to its best, whilst the soft top exhibits a number of areas of moss/mildew which would require rectification
- The wing mirror mounting stalks show signs of corrosion - a common Z3 issue
- The Z3-specific Style-78 wheels are in excellent condition, and look fantastic against the Titan Silver bodywork
The Mechanics
- 2.2-litre M54 inline-six engine
- Starts and idles well, but requires some mechanical attention - as soon as any throttle is applied, the car cuts out
- Engine bay presents in good order throughout, with no signs of any visual issues
- The most recent noted service was carried out in 2016 by the former keeper at 45,500 miles
- The car does not have a valid MoT certificate, and failed an exam on 27 July 2023 with the following notes made:
- “Repair immediately (major defects):
- Offside Front Integral body structure corroded to the extent that the rigidity of the assembly is significantly reduced sill area corroded (6.1.1 (c) (i))
- Exhaust Lambda reading after 2nd fast idle outside specified limits (8.2.1.2 (c)
- Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories):
- Nearside Rear Anti-roll bar linkage pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement (5.3.4 (a) (i))
- Offside Rear Anti-roll bar linkage pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement (5.3.4 (a) (i)
- Offside Front Anti-roll bar linkage pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement (5.3.4 (a) (i))
- Nearside Front Anti-roll bar linkage pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement (5.3.4 (a) (i))
Summary
Boasting a fantastic specification, desirable ‘Sport’ model features and in generally good aesthetic condition, this 2.2-litre Z3 Sport requires some attention to its underside and mechanicals before it sees the open road again, but once completed, would make a fantastic daily driver or weekend toy for any driving enthusiast.
