The Appeal

The big, broad-shouldered stance of the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle is the sort of thing that seems inimitably American. Reinforced, with a high stance for rough terrain and capable of taking a nearly 2,000kg payload, this is very much the workhorse of the US Military and, of course, the perfect replacement for the traditional jeep.

First introduced for service in the late 80s, the first AM General Humvees were employed in Panama in late '89, and in the following year, really went through their paces in the Gulf War. Over the next few decades it was regularly developed upon, with one of the most improved and capable designs being this - the M1123, with a whopping great 6.5-Litre V8 diesel engine and a 4-speed transmission - mounted on one of the most rugged suspension systems on the planet and a chassis that kept it lumbering across terrain ranging from the Gulf to Panama to Ukraine.

The M1123 used a troop seat kit for troop transport operations, a 200-ampere umbilical power cable to power shelter equipment, and stowage racks for ammunition and equipment. These are, naturally, incredibly rare in the UK - you certainly can't get them at your local showroom, important is enormously expensive and when new, they cost upwards of $150,000 apiece.

Upgraded in 2009 under the IROAN (The Inspect Repair Only As Necessary) programme at the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Barstow, CA, this hefty military truck later entered Civilian ownership at the start of the 2020s. As you'd expect, the original military paintwork is carrying some signs of wear, but the truck is ultimately in fine fettle, running as readily as you'd expect and capable of taking four passengers alongside its hefty rear payload space.
These impressive vehicles are utterly iconic - a great play up of American military strength, and doubtlessly amongst one of the most recognisable pieces of military equipment ever built.
