The Background

Faced with the unenviable task of replacing the much-loved classic series, Land Rover needed to bring something new that built on the much loved off-road capability of the previous model whilst upping the ante of interior luxury and presence.

The P38 debuted with the latest technology for a motor vehicle of the time and a stronger chassis to address the feedback from the ever loyal, and growing customer base.
In comparison with its predecessor the life cycle of the P38 aligned with the ever faster moving pace of vehicle innovations. In 2001 it was considered time to pull the curtain on the vehicle that had moved the marque forward and into a more mainstream appeal.

The Range Rover was no longer just competing for supremacy in muddy fields and boggy hills, but against the most luxurious vehicles on the road. To mark the passing the 30th Anniversary model was produced and launched at the Geneva Motor Show, with just 100 UK market models were made and finished in Aston Martin Wimbledon Green Metallic, and featured a 30th Anniversary badge on tailgate.

The interior featured high quality Connolly hide leather, stunning burr maple wood veneer and high-quality wood carpets and on 50 of these models it came with picnic tables and headrest TVs. This is not just your regular Range Rover, it's the marking of 30 years of a iconic model in great style and luxury.

The History

Registered in January 2001 X417 NNK has been enjoyed by five owners including the current one.

Signs of attentive keepers can be seen in the history of the vehicle as it has transitioned between servicing centres and remained with them until a new custodian has moved it to their preferred garage.

It has covered less than 9,000 miles in the last ten years and 1500 miles in the last year to be precise, and only comes out of the garage for special occasions. The current owner is relocating and has no other choice but to sell it.

The Paperwork

A complete logbook is accompanied by a full Range Rover book pack and a service book.

Where stamps are missing from the book, invoices can be seen in their place with detailed breakdowns of expensive items replaced without hesitation to keep this vehicle in excellent mechanical condition.

The vehicle received service along with some maintenance just 1,000 miles ago furthering its long stack of bills to keep this example in top condition. Two keys are also included with the vehicle.

The Interior

Slip into driver’s seat and you are greeted by a steering wheel that the owner has told us was treated to a leather clean and condition, it certainly belied it miles along with the leather beside the transmission tunnel that can become worn and stained by resting a knee on the light leather, fortunately, it is in excellent condition.

Scanning an eye around to the seats themselves the cream piping still displays magnificently and contrasts the dark green leather beautifully. Look up and you’ll see headlining that is in a new condition, we have been told this has been replaced recently with the correct pockets retained.

What is rare and unusual is that this car comes with rear seat entertainment, and factory fitted twin section folding walnut picnic tables, not the aftermarket retrofit ones. Only 50 of the 100 made came with this specs.
Open up the boot lid and you’ll find clean carpet that has escaped any deep staining from muddy boots or agricultural equipment. The owner advised that all the electronics, including the heated seats, satellite navigation, and air conditioning work without fault or interruption.

The Exterior

Similar to any classic the underside is an important place to start when appraising a vehicle, on a Range Rover the immediate worry is discovering an underside that has spent years on a damp field and turned bronze. As can be seen on the photographs of the underside this is not one of those.

Where the vehicle really shines is on the paintwork, named Wimbledon Green, the rarely seen colour could have easily been named Glorious Green for how it displays in all lights. As the sun strikes a panel a lighter hue is discovered beneath the darker metallic sheen.

Stepping around the outside the condition for a twenty year old vehicle of any type is exceptional. Some touch-up paint for a few chips on the leading edge of the bonnet and on the rear near side door is a good, but not perfect, colour match and the imperfection is noticeable when searched for.

A very small pin dent on the nearside rear quarter can been seen with a critical eye, but again this has to be searched for. The rear bumper showed minor imperfection, including some surface scratches and paintwork blemishes.
All four wheels shined in the light, and they have been refurbished and were wrapped in Pirelli Scorpion Zero tyres, including the spare wheel under the boot floor.

The Mechanics

As to be expected with a car that has such an excellent history the 4.6 litre motor fired on the first time of asking and moved around without any obvious issue. In terms of braking, there's upgraded brakes all around with vented discs.

The suspension has been fully refurbished with arnott stage 3 bags, the best in the industry, and it operated up and down then returned to level. The most recent MOT, carried out on 16th September 2021 passed with a clean sheet, a credit to the current owner’s attention to mechanical details as the vehicle was advised on a previous MOT for a front drive shaft seal, very few miles have been done since then, but the owner felt it necessary to replace the item anyway.

The Hevac heating system presents with no warnings on the screen. The oil is golden and clean, and the coolant presents in the correct pink colour and is clean.

It also has had a factory fitment fully stainless steel exhaust manufactured by double s, which comes with warranty, and a bill is present for more than £1200. Unlike many exhausts the back boxes fit flush with the bottom of the bumper and all that can be seen is the polished tips. The system sounds fantastic especially on cold start.

The Appeal

This is a chance to enjoy driving into the scenery in a modern classic as it becomes a classic for all times. When we look back across the life of Range Rover, the P38 will forever be a turning point in the brand’s history to which it was able to adjust, adapt and continue to dominate in a market that to this day is still defined by the brand.

The relatively short production window for the P38 Range Rover compared with the classic or even the newer L322 means that it is already rarer to find, especially so for 30th Anniversary in Wimbledon Green with only a few dozen other owners in the UK this is certainly a slice of the brand’s past that any enthusiast will adore owning.
